Summertime is one of most popular of all Gershwin songs. It is an aria composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 folk opera Porgy and Bess.  The flowing, languid melody with lush, rich harmonies bring the musician and an audience into a vivid picture of the hot, humid life of the early south where the living was easy.

The melody is perfect for featuring the French horn and trombone.  Listening to each other to blend individual parts with the full chords is important.  Focus on dynamics, especially the softs, will result in an accurate presentation of this beloved composition.

The music to the timeless hit song Sentimental Journey was written by Les Brown and Ben Homer, and the lyrics were written by Bud green. The song was first published in 1944, and soon become a hit for Doris Day in 1945. The song has been a hit for countless other recording artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Ringo Starr, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, and Bob Dylan. After an introduction, this arrangement preserves the tranquil mood of the song, and provides interesting parts for every player, and tasty harmonies throughout. Moon River Ã¨ un brano musicale composto da Johnny Mercer e Henry Mancini nel 1961. Fa parte della colonna sonora del film Colazione da Tiffany con Audrey Hepburn e ha vinto l'Oscar per la migliore canzone nell'edizione 1962.

Mercer e Mancini scrissero la canzone appositamente per la Hepburn in modo che fosse adatta alla sua estensione vocale. Moon River viene cantata dall'attrice nella scena in cui il personaggio interpretato da George Peppard, Paul Fred Varjak, scopre Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) che canta accompagnandosi con una chitarra alla finestra.

In origine, le parole iniziali scritte da Mercer erano I'm Holly, like I want to be, like Holly on a tree back home. ..., ma in seguito vennero modificate e rese più adatte al tema del film.

    On a visit to the Isle of Wight, British composer Edward George White came across an ancient steam locomotive bearing the sobriquet Puffing Billy. Inspired, White wrote the similarly titled Puffin’ Billy in 1952. The tune was recorded by a group labeled Melodi Light Orchestra and was included in the Chappell Recorded Music Library, a collection of tunes that could be used as incidental music in various types of productions. Both British and U.S. producers made use of the library; two stand out. One was BBC’s Children’s Favourites, which adopted Puffin’ Billy as theme music in 1952 and continued its use for 14 years. The second was Captain Kangaroo, a new 8 a.m. weekday children’s program launched by CBS-TV in October 1955 starring Bob Keeshan as the title character. Each episode opened and closed with Puffin’ Billy and would do so until 1974, making it White’s most recognizable composition.
       This brass quintet version follows the 1952 Melodi Light Orchestra recording pretty closely. It retains the key signatures of the original-G to B-flat, then back to G-and the tempo (cut time; half note = 112). Trumpets’ highest note is their A above the staff; trombone has one F above the staff. Tuba’s very last note is G below the staff. The rest is pretty much within normal playing range. Trumpets get somewhat of a workout with chromatic runs in sections E and F. Most will find this an easy piece to play.
   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 54 seconds.
