The lyrics are by Francis Beatty Silverwood (1863-1924), a Los Angeles clothier, and the music by Alfred V. Frankenstein (1873-1934).  It is used officially at funerals of California governors, most recently at the funeral of Ronald Regan. It was also played at Regan's inauguration as governor after which he quipped, Thanks for singing a song old enough to make me feel young..

A Piacere was a phrase used in the 19th century to leave the interpretation of a musical passage up to the player. In this piece, this is done by leaving an improvising soloist to play as he or she wants accompanied by a large brass and percussion ensemble. The brass ensemble plays written rhythmic and melodic cells, the order of which is indicated in concert by the conductor. A Piacere was a Commande d'Etat, from the French government in 1996. Depending on the improvisations, the duration is between 20-30 minutes. Explanations are to be found at the end of the score.A Piacere was premiered by Michel Godard, tuba soloist with the ensemble A Piacere, Philippe Barthod, conductor at Contrexeville, France on October 29, 1996.
