Monteverdi's third book of madrigals of 1592 is one of the earliest steps towards the writing of opera as we know it. In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals.

The 9th song, La Tra'l Sangue is a song about love and war. The opening words are Between the blood and the dead.

As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments. The individual madrigals are available separately. This flexible arrangement is equally playable on woodwind ensembles as on brass.

Part 4 in Bb/Eb/C(Bass clef) and

This is an arrangement of the famous Farandole by Georges Bizet from his L'Arlesienne Suite No.2. I did this arrangement as part of an entertainments programme that was based on music played by brass bands over the years in public park concerts. The arrangement is play is playable by all grades of brass bands.

The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet. Certainly as we get into the next three books, reduction to a quintet will become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible.

Era l'anima mia It was my soul, taken at last is another song about separating after love-making.

The Little English Girl March (L'Inglesina) by Delle Cese in not your usual march. As its name describes, it is lithe, delightful, cheerful and in some spots even delicate in style.

Arranged by Jim Tempest for 12-part Brass Ensemble for moderately advanced performers, the instrumentation is:

Piccolo Trumpet in B-flat, 3 Trumpets in B-flat, Flugelhorn, 2 Horns, 2 Trombones, 2 Euphoniums and Tuba.

‘Mowgli et la Meute des Loups’ raconte comment un jeune enfant élevé par des loups dans un milieu souvent hostile devient un jeune homme adulte.  C’est un peu ‘Pierre et le Loup’, sauf qu’ici les animaux sont plus durs, plus sauvages, moins prévisibles.  L’histoire est toujours passionnante et souvent drôle.

L’histoire traîte de différents thèmes tels que la formation de l’identité, la confrontation avec l’étranger, l’anxiété  et la sécurité.  Il y est question de respect, de séparation, d’adieu, mais aussi de la gaminerie des jeunes et de la sagesse des panthères.

Le texte et la musique s’unissent pour évoquer cette histoire.  â€˜Mowgli et la Meute des Loups’ n’est pas un monologue avec accompagnement musical, c’est un conte où l’image, le texte et la musique se renforcent l’un l’autre.…
