Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808677 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Classical,Holiday,Wedding. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3226035. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808677).      Mysteries surround this popular piece written originally for piano. Composed about 1810, it wasn’t until 1867, forty years after Beethoven died, that Ludwig Nohl found, transcribed and published Für Elise. Alas, the original signed manuscript that Nohl discovered has since disappeared.      One mystery of course, is Who was Elise? While scholarly guesses have identified several women who could or might have been Elise, there is still no definitive proof.     Another mystery: Did Beethoven actually write this piece? The pianist and musicologist Luca Chiantore has suggested that the original Beethoven manuscript, upon which Ludwig Nohl claimed to base his transcription, may never have existed. On the other hand, there are two surviving preliminary sketches for Für Elise in Beethoven’s hand, and the British composer and musicologist Barry Cooper has pointed out that the rough draft closely resembles the published version.     In this brass quintet version, Trumpet 1 and Trumpet 2 handle the melody-i.e., the right hand in the piano score-for much of the piece, both taking turns and playing together. Most of the time Tuba, Horn in F and Trombone do the honors for the left hand. Horn in F does, however, take the melody line occasionally, sometimes with Trumpet 2 playing a harmony line above. The score performance level is marked Advanced, and with all the sixteenth notes, this arrangement may look difficult. But it’s really more Intermediate, with the only really tricky parts coming in sections D and G.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808676 Composed by Scott Joplin (1868–1917). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Film/TV,Folk,Holiday,Love,Ragtime. Score and parts. 20 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3213035. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808676).     Marvin Hamlisch’s score for the 1973 movie The Sting revived interest in ragtime music. Ragtime, of course, is music, often in march-time, that features syncopation, a ragged beat. It originated in African-American districts of large cities and first flourished during the period, 1895-1918. One of the most successful ragtime composers was Scott Joplin, known as the King of Ragtime. Hamlisch used several Joplin compositions as background music for the George Roy Hill-directed film, and one of those was this beautiful and contemplative 1909 composition, Solace: A Mexican Serenade.     In All Music Guide to Classical Music: The Definitive Guide to Classical Music (Woodstra et al., ed., CMP Books: 2005), Blair Johnston called Solace a musical hybrid neither authentically Mexican nor authentic ragtime. It is, instead, a habanera, but also a very lovely piece of Americana.    This brass quintet arrangement of Solace was adapted from the Joplin piano score. Like the score, this arrangement is in 2/4 time and contains a lot of 16th notes. Joplin’s tempo instruction, however, is Very slow march time, and the metronome marking suggests 96 eighth notes a minute, so in reality the actual tempo is an andante 4/8. Trumpet 1 has some B-above-the-staff notes in the last section, Trumpet 2 has a few interesting rhythmic figures in section B; Trombone has 3 or 4 F-above-the-staff notes, and Tuba plays a couple of top-of-the-staff A’s in section D and at the very end. Plus, of course, the piece is syncopated.    Completed in 2017, this arrangement runs about 6 minutes, 10 seconds. Contact the arranger, Les Smith, at lessmith@ufl.edu; he would be delighted to hear from you. Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.791040 Composed by Irving Berlin. Arranged by Kevin P Holdgate. Contemporary. Score and parts. 21 pages. Kevin P Holdgate #4966967. Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.791040). There's No Business Like Show Business is an Irving Berlin song, written for the 1946 musical Annie Get Your Gun and orchestrated by Ted Royal. The song, a slightly tongue-in-cheek salute to the glamour and excitement of a life in show business, is sung in the musical by members of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in an attempt to persuade Annie Oakley to join the production. It is reprised three times in the musical but for the purposes of the show that I made this arrangement for only 2 verses were required... a third verse could easily be added of course with appropriate lyrics. The song is also featured in the 1954 movie of the same name, where it is notably sung by Ethel Merman as the main musical number. The movie, directed by Walter Lang, is essentially a catalog of various Berlin's pieces, in the same way that Singin' in the Rain-which starred Donald O'Connor as well-was a collection of Arthur Freed songs. There was also a disco version of the song made during the 1970s, with Merman reprising her singing role in The Ethel Merman Disco Album. The song became one of Ethel Merman's standards and was often performed by her at concerts and on television. This is a simple arrangement of the song playable by all levels of ensemble

Brass Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.791036 By Monty Python. By Harry Parr-Davies. Arranged by Kevin P Holdgate. Contemporary. Score and parts. 26 pages. Kevin P Holdgate #4889987. Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.791036). Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionThis is another popular song from the WW2 era, although it was written a few years before for a film of the same title.Sing As We Go is a 1934 British musical film starring Gracie Fields, John Loder and Stanley Holloway. The script was written by Gordon Wellesley and J. B. Priestley.Considered by many to be British music hall star Gracie Fields' finest vehicle, this film was written for her by leading novelist J.B. Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing. The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. The final scene of the millworkers returning to the re-opened mill while Fields leads them in the rousing title song has become an almost iconic film cliché.This is a simple arrangement of the title song with the lead line on solo Cornet. There is a vocal part included if required.

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.862340 Composed by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Arranged by Kevin P Holdgate. 20th Century,Broadway,Contest,Festival,Film/TV,Musical/Show. Score and parts. 45 pages. Kevin P Holdgate #468840. Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.862340). This is an arrangement with a tale to tell... A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808646 Composed by Léo Delibes (1836-1891). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Concert,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 50 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #516831. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808646).    Among the most noteworthy works by Clément Philibert Léo Delibes are two ballets, Coppélia (1870) and Sylvia (1876). Delibes based the latter on a Aminta, a play written by Torquato Tasso three centuries earlier, and it is populated by characters such as Eros, Diana, Orion, as well as Aminta and, of course, Sylvia. The third act opens in the forest with a celebration of the wine vintage, the Grand cortège de Bacchus (March and Procession of Bacchus). The March is exciting and brassy (enough so that the 1982-1986 television series, Knight Rider, used it for a musical theme!). The Procession is more song-like but ends with a big restatement of the March.    Completed in 2012, this arrangement runs about 6 minutes, 50 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808707 Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 38 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #6302383. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808707).      It took Johannes Brahms some 21 years to finish his First Symphony, but it was certainly worth the wait. A consensus masterpiece, Brahms’ First is outstanding, considered one of the finest symphonies coming out of the Austro-German tradition. Many see the finale as the centerpiece of this work, especially its main theme, the wonderfully noble chorale. But of course, every movement of this symphony is comprised of compelling melodies. The work is full of them. Some of the most beautiful occur in the slow movement, the second, which is marked Andante sostenuto. In this arrangement, those melodies are transformed into a moving setting for brass quintet, a musical expression of release and calm.

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.834001 Composed by JOHAN B. KOK. Arranged by BRIAN W. COPPING. Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 18 pages. EMK Music #27095. Published by EMK Music (A0.834001). The Dutch Composer, Johan B Kok (1889-1954), wrote over two- hundred compositions for different combinations of instruments, all of which included the Mandolin or the Mandolin Orchestra. ‘Joska’, originally written for two Mandolins, Mandola and Guitar, bears the subtitle and style of the ‘Zigeuner Romance’ or ‘Gypsy Romance’, and it may well have been inspired by Monti’s better known ‘Czardas’, which, significantly, was also originally written for Mandolin and Piano. Both pieces have contrasting slow and fast sections, which is typical of Central European ‘tavern music’, commonly associated with Hungary. ‘Czardas’, of course, means ‘tavern’ in Hungarian.

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1049261 Composed by Friedrich von Flotow. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Classical,Pop,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 18 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #653628. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1049261).      The first performance of "Martha, or The Market at Richmond," a romantic comic opera by the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, took place in Vienna in 1847. Subsequent presentations were performed in a number of other languages, including Hungarian, Czech, English and Italian. Two of the most memorable arias from Martha are “The Last Rose of Summer” and “Ach! so fromm.” “Last Rose” was, of course, based on the poem by Thomas Moore. “Ach! So fromm,” known more familiarly by its Italian lyric, “M'appari, tutt'amor,” was an original composition by Flotow, a piece he had composed for an earlier opera and inserted into Act 3 of Martha as Lyonel’s tenor solo.      In 1955, The Crew Cuts, a Canadian pop singing group, recorded a song titled “Mostly Martha.” Written by Dorcas Cochran (words) and Ralph Sterling (music), it charted in early 1956. As so many pop song writers have done, Sterling borrowed the melody from a piece of classical music: “M’appari.” While “M’appari” and “Mostly Martha” share the same melody, the words and sentiment are quite different. Lyonel laments that Martha has left him, while The Crew Cuts jauntily proclaim, “Mostly Martha, Mostly Martha. What has she got? She's got the most.”      This brass quintet arrangement takes a middle ground. It follows closely the basic structure of Flotow’s operatic aria but does so in a sort-of up-tempo manner and with a great deal of variation in the accompaniment. It’s not really The-Crew-Cut-style “She’s got the most,” but it’s certainly more positive than Lyonel’s song of longing. The piece starts with a suggested tempo of 90 bpm, changes to 80 at section C, and speeds up to 92 at the end. All instruments get a turn playing the melody, and there are no really tricky rhythmic patterns. There are, however, grace notes, rallentandos, an “a piacere” and a number of fermatas. All notes are, for the most part, within normal playing range of each of the five instruments, with two exceptions: near the end Trumpet 1 has an A above its staff, followed two measures later by a high B-flat.      Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 2 minutes, 45 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.
