Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.808659

Composed by Joseph E. Howard and Ida Emerson. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Pop,Traditional. Score and parts. 23 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #2070943. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808659).

Prerecorded wax cylinders were first marketed in 1889. Ten years later, when this Howard and Emerson tune was published, those cylinders were referred to as records, and Arthur Collins made the first recording of Hello! Ma Baby. The lyrics tell the tale of a guy who has a girlfriend he knows only through the telephone. This was one of the first songs to deal with the telephone (that medium, too, being still pretty new). The chorus was kicked back into the spotlight in 1955 when a certain movie frog sang and danced his way across a Warner Brothers cartoon background. The current version used the 1899 sheet music as its source, but is a completely original arrangement that enhances the ragtime feel of the music. This is an infectious piece that is fun to play and a toe-tapper for the audience.

Completed in 2016, this arrangement’s performance time runs about 3 minutes, 20 seconds. Contact the arranger, Les Smith, at lessmith@ufl.edu. Composed by James Johnston Stewart and Sergei Prokofiev. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Contemporary. Score and parts. 18 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #4295617. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808691).

Sergei Prokofiev’s comic opera, The Love for Three Oranges, Op. 33, was first produced in Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre in 1921. Prokofiev subsequently composed a concert suite from six of the opera’s selections. Of these, the March is probably best known. It was adopted as the theme song for a popular radio series, The FBI in Peace and War, which ran on CBS 1944-1958. Through its use on the program, listeners became familiar with the music and were so impressed that it was recorded and published independently as The FBI March. Because of its bold, driving and rhythmic nature, the March is well suited for a brass group, and makes for an exciting experience for both musicians and audience. This arrangement, written for brass quintet using trumpets pitched in C, was completed in 2012 and runs about 1 minute, 38 seconds. (A Bb-trumpets version is also available.)
The arranger, Les Smith, can be reached at lessmith@ufl.edu. If you liked this one, check out Les’ Entry of the Graduates: Processional, Funeral March of a Marionette, Golliwog’s Cake Walk, Marche from Sylvia, March Militaires and War March of the Priests (from Athalia). Composed by Heinrich Schutz. Arranged by Richard Decker. Baroque,Chamber,Historic,Multicultural,Renaissance,World. 64 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #6689647. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.817178).

Revered as one of the greatest German composers of the 17th century, Heinrich Schütz embraced his early studies with Giovanni Gabrieli and developed his own dramatic style of antiphonal music for voices and instruments.  Originally written for the centenary of the Reformation in 1617 to honor then Emperor Matthias and his family, this engaging composition translated as Praise the Lord for He is Kind was published in his Psalmen Davids (Op. 2) in 1619 and translates well four centuries later, giving today's brass choirs the opportunity to recreate those glorious antiphonal choir sounds of the early Baroque period.  Beyond brass ensemble concerts, consider adding some musical fireworks to your next band or orchestra concerts with this impressive and memorable showcase for your brass section.  Trumpet parts in B-flat and alternate C trumpet are provided. A recording of the entire transcription is included.

For those who find the antiphonal brass music of Gabrieli exciting, this triple quartet antiphonal setting of Schein’s music will be a welcomed addition to the large ensemble brass choir repertoire. Magnificently scored, this triple antiphonal quartet transcription can be an impressive and memorable showcase for your band or orchestra brass section at your next concert. SKU: A0.808682

Composed by Turner Layton (1894-1978), Henry Creamer (1879-1930). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Holiday,Jazz,Pop. Score and parts. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3454039. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808682).

After You’ve Gone, composed in 1918 by Turner Layton (melody) and Henry Creamer (lyrics), was a hit from the beginning. Al Jolson introduced it to live audiences, Marion Harris’ record went to #1 in early 1919, and since then dozens of artists have recorded it . . . and many are still doing so. The words are rather sad-she’s leaving and he’s trying to get her to stay-but played up tempo, the melody is bouncy and fun. That sad-versus-happy dichotomy is incorporated in this arrangement. It begins with a bright, bouncy introduction and first-time-through of the chorus, then slows so the Horn in F can play a melancholic and somewhat schmaltzy rendition of the verse. The Tuba provides a transition back to the upbeat chorus, and we are again off to the races. Layton’s melody slips and slides from one instrument to the next (with the Tuba getting an entire iteration all to itself!), until the pace again slows for a 4-bar reminder of the sentimental verse, which then gives way to a rousing Dixieland-like closing.

SKU: A0.1430702

Composed by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Arranged by Richard Decker. 20th Century,Contest,Festival,Historic,Multicultural,World. 64 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #1011201. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1430702).

This brass choir arrangement set for an orchestral brass section of Coleridge-Taylor's Sea Drift captures the subtle textures of the composer’s chromatic harmonies inspired in his original vocal octet setting of a poem by T. B. Aldrich. Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers. One of Coleridge-Taylor's rare A Cappella compositions for vocal SATB double choir here arranged for large brass ensemble, Sea Drift is infused with descriptive tone-color painting highlighting the tragic story of the merchant sailor who perishes in a stormy sea to the despair of his lover onshore. The arrangement is scored for an orchestral brass section of three B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, four horns , three trombones and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition.

“The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Interesting music, expertly arranged, fun to perform, and well received by audiences. Highly recommended!”   Wesley Nance, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman School of Music

Composed by William Grant Still. Arranged by Richard Decker. 20th Century,Blues,Contest,Festival,Jazz,Multicultural,World. 56 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #772105. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1171832).

From the Music of Black Composers Series is this arrangement of the third movement Humor from William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony for a brass choir of 4 B-flat trumpets, 4 horns in F, 3 trombones, euphonium and tuba. Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the flavor of the Blues and folk music to the symphony. For Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution he incorporated into a symphonic work. As part of the early 20th Century Harlem Renaissance in New York City, the work was enthusiastically received across the USA and overseas. This brass choir arrangement of the third movement will enliven concerts with its colorful rhythms reminiscent of Gershwin and blues harmonies. Beyond brass ensemble programs feature your band or orchestra brass section on this exciting arrangement which can be paired with the additional first movement (Longing) of Still's Afro-American Symphony arranged for similar brass choir with Charles Decker Music Press.

Composed by William Grant Still. Arranged by Richard Decker. 20th Century,Blues,Classical,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,World. 61 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #699415. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1095398).

This is a brilliant arrangement of the first movement Longing of William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony  for a brass choir of four B-flat trumpets, four horns in F, three trombones, euphonium and tuba. William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in October 1931 at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the melancholy flavor of the Blues to the symphony. For William Grant Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution, separate from the spiritual and popular jazz, and he wanted to incorporate it into a symphonic work based on Western classical symphonic instrumentation and forms. As part of the early 20th Century Harlem Renaissance in New York City, this work was enthusiastically received across the USA and overseas. Pair this brass choir arrangement of the first movement Longing with the third movement Humor also at Charles Decker Music Press to enliven a concert with colorful rhythms, soulful melodies and blues harmonies. Beyond brass ensemble programs feature your band or orchestra brass section on this memorable and exciting arrangement.
