Published by John McAllister (A0.778222). Seven Modes, Seven Duets is a duet series for wind (band) instruments. The duets have been written to be a comfortable range for any of the instruments (minus horn part, which is free due to the range issues). Each mode has it’s own unique sound and special effort has been made to accentuate the colors from each district combination of notes and the harmonies they produce (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian). The duets are mostly on an average high school level player, but can be a great challenge for younger players. More advanced musicians may find use specifically in the exploration of melody/harmony in each particular mode.  Best instruments for use: Flute Oboe Clarinet Bass Clarinet Bassoon Trumpet Trombone Baritone Tuba Mallets (xylophone, marimba, bells if players 8vb)

A collection of six duets and six trios written with the youngest players in mind!Ranges limited so that students can focus on rhythmic accuracy, tone quality, dynamics, and expression.Rhythms are limited to whole, dotted half, half, quarter, and paired eighth notes. Rhythms that even the youngest musicians can count! No syncopation! Each piece is about one minute in length to accommodate the limited stamina of younger players.A variety of styles and moods to motivate studentsEvery measure of each part is numbered! You're welcome! Duets may be performed by any two instruments, with like or mixed instrumentation, but if you use mixed instrumentation you may have better results if upper instruments play the top line and lower instruments play the bottom line. Also, it may be preferable to avoid having two tubas, as the results may be less desirable.Trios should be performed by two higher pitched instruments and one lower pitched instrument. Parts 1 and 2 could be flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, or horn. Part 3 should be at least one octave lower, and should be bassoon, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, trombone, baritone, or tuba.Books for Flute/Oboe, Bb treble, Eb treble, Tenor Saxophone, Horn, Bass Clef, Tuba, Bells/XylophoneNotesDuetsSneaking AroundMeter: 4/4Key: BbRange: A - GFocus: Staccato, Slur, Phrasing, Dynamic ContrastCountry DanceMeter: 3/4Key: BbRange: A - GFocus: Staccato, Triple Meter, PhrasingAll Aboard!Meter: 4/4Key: C minorRange: Bb - AbFocus: Staccato, Slur, Phrasing, Dynamic Contrast,Note: The second part on this piece may be especially challenging for young flute, oboe, and trombone players.Give and TakeMeter: 3/2Key: BbRange: Bb - FFocus: Interplay between voices, especially contrasting staccato and legato, Triple MeterNote: The meter signature of 3/2 allows for livelier rhythmic content without presenting sixteenth notes. It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I. Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of George Asaf, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call Fall In. This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes. Included is a Full Score and parts for Brass Ensemble. Also included are substitute parts for Eb Horns and Treble Clef Baritone Horn A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Bridges to the SkyPittsburgh Rhapsody (2008) for brass band was commissioned by the River City BrassBand, Denis Colwell, music director, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of thecity of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with support from the Pittsburgh 250 CommunityConnections Committee. The first movement, Tributaries, is inspired by Pittsburgh as a city of three rivers andparticularly the confluence of two rivers to form one. Throughout the movementthere are a number of places where two ideas converge to become one. Opening witha fanfare-like gesture, the music then becomes more flowing before building up againto a climax. The second movement, Memorial Song, is a lyrical duet for flugelhorn and euphonium. The movement was not conceived as a specific memorial, but its lyrical and elegiacmood represents the many memorials that we all celebrate, both personal andcorporate. The third movement, Bridges to the Sky, celebrates Pittsburgh as a city of bridges. Themusic takes inspiration from the sense of exhilaration that one can get driving amidstthe post-industrial landscape of roads, flyovers, bridges, and hills.InstrumentationSoprano Cornet in Eb2 Solo Cornets in Bb2 1st Cornets in BbRepiano Cornet in Bb2 2nd Cornets in Bb2 3rd Cornets in BbFlugelhorn in Bb3 Horns in F(or 3 Alto Horns in Eb — alternate parts provided)2 Baritones in Bb2 TrombonesBass Trombone2 Euphoniums4 TubasPercussion (3 players)I: timpaniII: snare drum, bass drumIII: vibraphone, xylophoneThis is the score only.  The individual parts are available for sale.  The full set of parts should be purchased as a physical item elsewhere on this site, due to file size limitations.

Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808646 Composed by Léo Delibes (1836-1891). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Concert,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 50 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #516831. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808646).    Among the most noteworthy works by Clément Philibert Léo Delibes are two ballets, Coppélia (1870) and Sylvia (1876). Delibes based the latter on a Aminta, a play written by Torquato Tasso three centuries earlier, and it is populated by characters such as Eros, Diana, Orion, as well as Aminta and, of course, Sylvia. The third act opens in the forest with a celebration of the wine vintage, the Grand cortège de Bacchus (March and Procession of Bacchus). The March is exciting and brassy (enough so that the 1982-1986 television series, Knight Rider, used it for a musical theme!). The Procession is more song-like but ends with a big restatement of the March.    Completed in 2012, this arrangement runs about 6 minutes, 50 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.817619 Composed by James Bland. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Folk,Spiritual,Traditional. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #424503. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619).      James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer.  He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions.  Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer.  Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.”  His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years.      Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect.  Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived.  Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms.  One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport.      This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction.   The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba.  Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint.  Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880.  Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country:  softly and tenderly.  The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction.      There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement.  Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff.  Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes.  The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major.  Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66.      Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would also like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter "Sweetwater Brass Press" (without the quotation marks) in the SheetMusicPlus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.)
