In addition to being a joy for friends to play together, they are a great resource for teachers to play at lessons with their students, they are are suitable for informal Christmas performances, and many are appropriate for church services. Note: the duets in this collection have NOT been arranged to be fully compatible with Mr. Baird's duet collections for other instruments. Instead, these have been arranged specifically for bass clef wind instruments (trombones, euphoniums, and/or bassoons). This collection does include the duets found in previously released Five More Christmas Duets for Bass Clef Instruments by Mr. Baird. This is a brand new work for brass quartet, using brass band instrumentation: Cornet (doubling Flugelhorn), Tenor Horn, Baritone Horn and Euphonium.It was written as a submission for a new brass quartet (A4 Brass Quartet) comprising musicians from the RNCM, but didn't get selected. Each movement is based on the ensemble's name and contains a pun on A4. Each movement also has fourths involved in it somewhere.The first movement is called Aforethought (because it contains my initial ideas) and it uses a mixture of tonal and quartal harmonies. Melodies and harmony are based around fourths and fifths. It requires all players to be able to flutter-tongue. After the opening fanfare, there is a march-like melody on the cornet, accompanied by the rest of the ensemble. This is followed by a contrasting tune using intervals of a fourth. These ideas are developed over several keys until the first march-like melody returns. The fanfare idea closes the movement.The second movement is called Aforementioned. It takes its ideas from the first movement, but gives them a bluesy style. The cornet player changes to the flugelhorn for this movement which has a beautiful languid melody. The horn shares some of the glory towards the end.The third and final movement is called Aphorhythm (A4 rhythm) and is in 7/8 time. The jerky little melody plays with the pulse of the 7/8 and smoothly morphs into a steadier 'middle 8' section before reprising the opening music.Altogether, this is an enjoyable and exciting piece for brass quartet..

Richard Jones #5968417. Published by Richard Jones (A0.1026133). Until the 1970s the Minuet in G Major was attributed to the great Johann Sebastian Bach. For centuries musicologists believed it was an original composition as it was a part of the manuscript notebook compiled by Bach and his wife Anna Magdalena Bach, in 1725.Petzold was born in Konigstein, Germany, in 1677 and little is known about his exact birth date. Relatively few pieces ofhis have survived the centuries, but the inclusion of his two minuets in the Anna Magdalena Notebook, remain the most famous of these.The theme to the Minuet in G was used in 1966 by the American pop group The Toys, in their song 'A Lover's Concerto'.In this arrangement I have syncopated the theme and accompanying parts to create a jazz feel. From letter A the theme appears in the cornet and euphonium lines and then at letter B the theme is transferred to the horn section. Whilst the theme is in the horn section there is a counter riff in the baritones and trombones, and a simple jazz syncopation in the cornets. At C the key changes to the sub-dominant key of C and the back row cornets get the tune in a simple but syncopated form whilst a flowing counter melody continues in the lower instruments. Then at D the euphoniums, baritones and basses have their chance and the syncopation appears in the horns and interjections in the cornets. After the D.S the the piece goes to the Coda, which hasthe tune split between each of the sections of the band with a fortissimo climax.

In writing the Ricercare In B Flat Major For Brass Orchestra, it came to my attention the works of Giovanni Gabrielli, Palestrina and other composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The fugues of Johann Sebastien Bach and his contemporaries are the descendants of the ricercare in that the themes are treated contrapuntally. The main feature in the ricercare and the fugue is the melodic imitation of the principal theme. Unlike the fugues of Bach that includes the countersubject, the ricercare has no regular countermelody to provide musical interest to the theme. Another feature to discover in the Ricercare In B Flat Major is the concerto nature, where the trumpet ensemble plays against instruments of lower pitch registration and the French horn chorus plays against instruments of different tone colors. The concluding section of the piece includes all instruments playing together.In performing the work, the brass orchestra performs together on stage. There also may be a possibility of having the work performed in different parts of a hall to give listeners an idea of the concerto-like works of Gabrielli’s sacred symphonies. This idea may be decided at the discretion of the conductor and the ensemble.The work is suitable for concert use and may be used to teach students the compositional techniques composers of previous centuries used in composing their works.

All instruments have smoothly moving harmonies and some melody.  Sing it slow and easy.There are no rapid passages that require advanced technical ability.  A great song for musicians at an intermediate level to play musically and for an audience to enjoy.Playing time is 2.75 minutes (4 w/repeat)
