This arrangement of the traditional hymn begins with the low brass playing a determined bass line that supports a progressive addition of melody and harmony. The texture changes to an antiphonal-style that could possibly be performed with the ensemble split in two. The piece returns to the grounded feel but with full sounds and rich harmonies. This work would be a satisfying prelude to a congregational singing of the hymn in its traditional format or simply programed for concert settings. While not technically difficult, this music will challenge the endurance and focus of the trombone and tuba players.

Its origin goes back to the 14th century and was eventually added to the John Wesley hymnal in 1739. This arrangement has one harmonization for all of the verses and a final more elaborate section for optional piccolo trumpet. This arrangement can be performed by intermediate level players.  Trumpet parts are in B-flat.

Debussy's original six movement suite was written and first performed in 1908 on the Piano.It was dedicated to Debussy's daughter, Claude- Emma who was only three at the time. The four movements for brass are: 1. Jimbo's Lullaby (about an elephant) 2. Serenade for the Doll (about an Oriental porcelain doll) 3. The Little Shepherd (a shepherd with his flute) 4. Golliwogg's Cakewalk (they were stuffed black dolls with red pants & wild hair. This 11 minute suite is suitable for advanced performers and is the only arrangement published of this work for brass.
