King Cotton is a military march composed in 1895 by John Philip Sousa, for the Cotton States and International Exposition (1895). This fun arrangement and challenging arrangement for alto saxophone and euphonium is sure to be a crowd favorite and includes altissimo passages in the saxophone part.

The Composer:

John Philip Sousa (November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932) was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era, known primarily for American military and patriotic marches. Because of his mastery of march composition, he is known as The March King, or the American March King due to his British counterpart, Kenneth J. Alford also being known by the former nickname. Among his best-known marches are The Stars and Stripes Forever (National March of the United States of America), Semper Fidelis (Official March of the United States Marine Corps), The Liberty Bell (used as the theme for Monty Python's Flying Circus), The Thunderer and The Washington Post.

Composed by Mike Batt. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Contemporary. Score and parts. 12 pages. Peet du Toit #6076847. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802639).

Michael Philip Batt, LVO (born 6 February 1949) is an English singer-songwriter, musician, arranger, record producer, director, conductor and former Deputy Chairman of the British Phonographic Industry. Having achieved substantial international success as a solo artist he is particularly known in the UK for creating The Wombles pop act, writing many hits including the chart-topping Bright Eyes, and discovering Katie Melua. He has also conducted many of the world's great orchestras, including the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony and Stuttgart Philharmonic in both classical and pop recordings and performances.

Bright Eyes is a song written by Mike Batt and performed by Art Garfunkel. It was written for the soundtrack of the 1978 British animated adventure drama film Watership Down. Rearranged as a pop song from its original form in the film, the track appears on British and European versions of Garfunkel's 1979 Fate for Breakfast and on the US versions of his 1981 album Scissors Cut. It was the biggest-selling single of 1979 in the UK, remaining at number one for six weeks and selling over a million copies there. Richard Adams, author of the original novel is reported to have hated the song. A cover of the song was later used in the television series of the same name explicitly as its theme song.

Here is a lovely version thereof for a brass quintet and drum set, with the euphonium as soloist in the verses, harmonising by the French horn, muted 2nd trumpet for effects, the first trumpet in the choruses and the tuba supporting with excellent base lines. Your audiences will be intrigued, wanting to hum along!

By Stevie Wonder. By Henry Cosby, Stevie Wonder, and Sylvia Moy. Arranged by Phil Lawrence. Pop,Soul. Score and parts. 41 pages. Phillip Lawrence #3533105. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883765).

Up-Tight Stevie Wonder Trombone Trio.

Yes, you read it right, a Stevie Wonder number as a trombone trio? Over ten years ago I did the famous Tom Jones number It’s Not Unusual which I knew would be a hit, and it was, and I’ve sold 100’s and its also been on a few CD albums too. I’m not quite sure how these flashes of ideas come to me to arrange, but this time I admit that its a more of a  jaw drop than It’s Not Unusual when I first told some friends.

Composed by Gustav Mahler. Arranged by Phil Lawrence. Concert,Contemporary,Easter,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 35 pages. Phillip Lawrence #4283561. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883780).

There’s no doubt that this is one of the saddest and yet beautiful works ever, The Urlicht from Mahler’s 2nd Symphony in C minor for alto voice and alternatively here for Flugel solo. I arranged this 14 years ago for a dear friend trumpeter of mine who passed before his time and a favourite of his.

I discovered Mahler 2 at the age of 16 and like Kaplin, it has been a journey of understanding and study for me sifting through Mahler’s own handwritten score at times and through his letters at the time of composing which on and off was near 20 years! The recording you will here attached is by The Fairey Band (from my album with them It's Not Unusual worldofbrass) conducted by Frank Renton and sung by one of the most beautiful alto voices in this land, Margaret McDonald. I’ve no doubt in my mind this arrangement works 100% hence me including the recording itself. Alternatives within the score are Picc A tpt in lieu of Sop, the solo line flg instead of mezzo voice, vibraphone instead of harp.

Composed by Eric Burdon and Eric Victor Burdon. Arranged by Phil Lawrence. Contemporary. Score and parts. 64 pages. Phillip Lawrence #5287377. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883786).

The idea for this arrangement was given to me by an old friend who played in BR Edge Hill band with when we were kids, Christine Humphreys and to do it for bass trombone, the more I looked at it thinking of Eric Burdon’s voice from The Animals with his first verse nearly too low for him to scrape the lower notes and then the later verses near to top of his register suited. The Animals though in A minor, so for BT I dropped it to Ab minor a real shall we say juicy register for bass trombone plus the added attraction of setting it in the lower octave pedal area to show the instrument off. There aren’t may Bass Trom solos in the rep, so now we add one more!

An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song at a club in Newcastle, England, where it was performed by Northumberland folk singer Johnny Handle.

The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose him because they wanted to sing something different. The Animals version moves the narrative from the initial point of view of a woman drawn into a life of decline to that of a man whose father is a gambler and a drunk, rather than the adorable person of the previous versions.
