The varying time signatures in the first half of the piece didn’t seem to cause any issues in her arriving at the alter safely and we are still happily married after 30 years!It can, of course, be used in any setting and if my suggested tempo seems a little on the quick side I’ll blame that on the length of the church nave. Pick a tempo which suits your situation and try to capture a majestic feel.

His favourite piece of music was Pictures At An Exhibition, particularly The Great Gate of Kiev. This piece is loosely based on this last movement and the Promenade. It is firmly placed in the British Brass Band 19th Century tradition, and would make a wonderful addition to any concert. I do hope you enjoy playing it, or even just listening to the rendition on SMP.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767279). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. This song, No 10 starts with the line Here Tirsi laughed and wriggled under the two(twin?) stars of the beautiful Clorinda I think you get the picture! We can see plenty of musical laughing and wriggling in the music with dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs. The top two voices are Clorinda (doing a fair amount of wriggling herself) while the bottom two take the part of Tirsi. There are places where all four voices give vent to an exclamation and where, presumably, the two lovers had to stop for breath! The original incorporates a very basic continuo part, which I have shared between the resting voices. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

Done using drums or bugles, this call pays respect without ceremony or circumstance and is usually delivered before the official takes the floor to address a congregation. Generals would receive a flourish for each star, the President would receive four.In the case of this piece, you will picture a war torn battalion of troops returning home after battle. Much like a When Johnny Comes Marching Home feel with its own twists, both musically and viscerally. Recommended for any patriotic gathering, this piece is part of a larger work, An American Salutation.

He and Edvard Grieg wanted to create a Norwegian musical expression and a Norwegian music based on Norwegian folk music traditions. In addition, he was known as a positive, cheerful and excited person. However, as is well known, Nordraak’s life ended abruptly, he became infected with tuberculosis, and died a painful death on a beautiful May day in Berlin in 1866. This work is dedicated to Rikard Nordraak's memory.

I wrote the main melody for this piece at the beautiful Kasjuni Bay, west of Split in Croatia. Picture the scene: a little bay surrounded by hills, the Adriatic Sea and Croatian islands, with only the sound of the sea lapping at the beach. The melody came to me and I hummed it into my mobile phone to make sure I didn't lose it! I planned to work up a more complex piece, but in the end I loved the simplicity of the melody and opted to form a short simple piece around it.
