The haunting and beautiful piece For the Love of a Princess is the most recognisable piece of music from James Horner's fantastic score to the film Braveheart, released in 1995. This arrangement for brass trio is extremely expressive and would be an excellent addition to any concert programme.

The PDF download includes the full score and 3 parts: Trumpet in Bb, Horn in F, and Trombone (bass clef). There is also an alternative trombone part, in Bb treble clef. The trombone part could easily be performed on the tuba if so desired.

Various articles in specialized journals and sites have cited the composer, such as the Flutist Quarterly (Circus Brasilis - The flute music of Sergio Roberto de Oliveira), Early Music America (Something New for Early Music), Andante.com (The heirs of Villa-Lobos), 21st Century Music, Musicabrasileira.org, etc. Sergio Roberto de Oliveira has frequently been invited to lecture at American universities, and has spoken at more than a dozen institutions including Princeton and Duke. In 2009 he was Artist-in-Residence at Duke University. In addition the USA and the UK, Oliveira's music has also been played in many countries, with invitations for concerts exclusively with his music in México, Italy and Holland (Amsterdam).  The Spanish Magazine Sonograma has published 2 interviews with Sergio.

Sergio is the founder and a member of the group of composers Prelúdio 21. The group is one of the most active worldwide. It holds a distinguished place in Brazilian contemporary music, having been active for 15 consecutive seasons, with a permanent series of monthly concerts since 2008. In 2011 the group released the CD String Quartets, with performances by the Quarteto Radamés Gnattali. Oliveira is also a member of the group of composers Vox Novus, based in New York.

To commemorate 15 years of activity as a composer, Oliveira released a box set with 4 CDs, as well as a CD with composer Mark Hagerty, and produced the series QUINZE, with 13 concerts including his works, between July and October of 2012.  More than 130 musicians, including 28 composers, participated of QUINZE (CDs and series).

His discography includes 14 CDs as producer, 14 as composer, 22 as general producer, 2 as arranger and 2 as pianist. His catalog of compositions includes approximately 115 works for various ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra.  

Sergio Roberto de Oliveira is a member of the Latin Academy of the Arts and Science of Recording.

He died from pancreatic cancer in 2017.

The court of Sigismund III Vasa of Poland attracted quite a few Italian Renaissance masters interested in writing in an opulent style reminiscent of the polychoral stylings of Gabrieli. This motet is an especially peppy and epic display of rhythmic and timbral virtuosity paying collectively tribute to martyrs who disdained the rule of earthly princes and so earned a heavenly crown. This is a 6-voice motet arranged for seven instruments so as to allow for invertible counterpoint.

A glossary of the Polish expressive markings is available upon request; note that I have endeavoured to give some of the instruments a bit of a spicy rhythmic profile and render this score a bit more balletic, in the manner Stravinsky arranged Gesualdo madrigals.

This is a fairly faithful brass quintet adaption of the Prince party tune. Trombone is featured heavily and takes the iconic guitar cadenza at the end. Trumpet 1 also gets featured on Prince's guitar solo (which is written out and kind of high). If you have a stand out trombonist in your group, this will work really well (and if your trombonist is not very strong, you probably should go check out one of Zack's other Prince arrangements).

This is a brass quintet version of Prince's hit Kiss. The arrangement is a combination of the album version of the tune ( which was very straight and witty) and the live version (which had a horn section and was a lot funkier). We've classified this as advanced in difficulty due to a couple high notes in the first trumpet, french horn, and trombone--along with the need for everyone to have really solid time. Trumpets and trombone get most of the melody on this one. This will be a great opener to your Prince set (Zack's arrangements of Little Red Corvette, Purple Rain, Delirious, Raspberry Beret, 1999 and When Doves Cry are all available on this site).

This is a brass quintet arrangement of the iconic Prince power ballad featured in the movie Purple Rain. Trumpet has melody first time through, then the trombone. Trumpet 2 gets a shortened version of the guitar solo, then it keeps building to the end. A lot of close harmonies and parts interweaving to create the effect of guitars and keyboards. A really cool closer to your Prince set! Difficulty is medium advanced due to trumpet and trombone range and importance of good time!

This brass quintet is a very classical take on one of Prince's more underrated hits. Zack wrote this as a French horn feature (who else would you feature on a Prince ballad?), though trumpet 1 and tuba also get some solo space as well. Like the original, the piece starts sparsely and builds to an exciting climax. Rated advanced because it really requires an excellent horn player.

This is a brass quintet version of Prince's When Doves Cry. It begins with Trumpet 1 playing the iconic opening guitar lick, then it moves into a reasonably faithful version of the song. At the third verse there is a deep reharmonization of the melody, then it moves into the end vamp with trumpet 1 and trombone soloing together. Very cool- and people will recognize it. Medium level of difficulty (a couple high notes in the trombone and french horn).

This is a brass quintet version of Prince's hit Little Red Corvette, done fairly faithfully to the original recording except for a bold reharmonization of the second verse. The melody gets passed around to all the instruments and the french horn gets to play the guitar solo towards the end (because, well...why not!). This is a bit rangy for the tuba and horn--but otherwise not too challenging for the rest of the quintet. Intermediate difficulty.

     The defeat of Igor Svyatoslavich, a Rus’ prince, in his 1185 campaign against invading Cuman (Polovtsy) tribes was immortalized in the Russian epic, The Lay of Igor’s Campaign. Seven centuries later, Alexander Borodin started work on an opera based on that old tale. Borodin died before finishing, but Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov completed Prince Igor, and it was performed for the first time in 1890. Sixty-three years later the Broadway production Kismet opened featuring songs adapted by Robert Wright and George Forrest from the music of Borodin. Arguably, the most popular of the show’s songs was Stranger in Paradise, which was based on the Gliding Dance of the Maidens from the Polovtsian Dances of Prince Igor.
     This beautiful brass quintet arrangement of Gliding Dance of the Maidens was adapted from the orchestra score. The key is A major, time signature is 4/4 and tempo marking is Andantino at the opening, slowing to a suggested quarter note = 63 at measure 15. Trumpets, Horn in F and Trombone all play a few grace notes. Highest notes for Trumpets are their G-sharp just above the staff; for Trombone, E above the staff. While not particularly challenging technically, the key to playing this piece is interpretation and feeling.
     This arrangement was completed in 2017, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 38 seconds.
