Elizabeth Raum's Quintet for Brass was written in 1980 and is just now being published for the first time. The work is in four movements: 1. Prelude, 2. Scherzo and Blues, 3. Passacaglia and Fugue and 4. Rondo. It is written for traditional brass quintet with Trumpets in B-flat for advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length. The music is very expressive and tonal. Below is a brief description of the work by the composer, Elizabeth Raum. This piece is very much based on various musical forms. The Prelude has opened many a musical work from Baroque to the present. Then follows Scherzo and Blues, a light hearted bonbon moving into a lazy blues. Next is pure Baroque starting with a Passacaglia followed by a Fugue based on the Passacaglia progression. And finally finishing up with the Rondo, in a major key, light-hearted, canonic in places, with a feeling of the evolution of musical form.

This Rondo movement is marked Presto and works at a great clip or less hectic.  The tune is catchy and the interaction between the parts is clever, bouncy, and charming.  This is a good encore or stand-alone piece as well.  Some of the variations get tricky, but lay well for the instruments. Beethoven doing what he does best, but with only three parts! This flexible trio allows for part 1 to be played on horn, trumpet, or bass clef instrument, and part 2 for horn or BC.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808697).     Henry Alford (1810–1871), Church of England cleric and man of many talents, wrote the words for Come, Ye Thankful People, Come in 1844. Fourteen years later, Alford’s hymn was set to a melody composed by George J. Elvey (1816–1893). Elvey had named the tune St. George’s, Windsor after the chapel in Windsor, England, where he was organist. The first verse of the hymn rejoices in the harvest and calls for celebrants to Come to God's own temple, come; raise the song of harvest home! As such, the hymn gained popularity in the United States as a celebration of Thanksgiving.    In keeping with the song’s celebratory and triumphal nature, this arrangement uses a fanfare as the recurring motif. The fanfare opens the piece, followed by a rejoicing, exultant first statement of the melody. In the second statement, the fanfare figure returns and forms the structure for the section. The third statement is styled as a kind of rondo; the fourth and last, grandioso. The fourth statement also changes key twice--F to B-flat, then to E-flat--includes a walking bass part and ends with, again, the fanfare. The piece should be played Allegro moderato, about 120 bpm, and there are no really tricky rhythmic figures. Most notes are well within the normal range of the five instruments-Trombone’s highest are a couple of high F notes; Trumpet 1, high A notes. So most players will have little or no trouble.     This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 44 seconds. It echoes the sentiments of the  Cold War late 1960s in its bold, brass gestures of confidence and elan. Set in traditional three movement form, the opening Allegro heralds the return to decorum following the upheaval of the decade. The secondary theme is reminiscent of the English lyricism of Vaughn Williams. This sentiment returned to the pen of this composer in recent years in compositions commissioned by London clarinetist Alison Eales. This score originally from 1969 was edited during the Pandemic of 2020-2021. Andante is a lamenting chorale played by the Tuba  laced by haunting melismas suggesting the drawn out moods in the music of Shostakovich. The final Rondo is spirited with a theme in 9/8 (3/4 + 3/8) with subsequent sections of mix meter and pulsating textures. Instrumentation is 2 Trumpets in C, 2 Horns in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba.

All of the material after measure 45 is everything that has been played up to that point, but in complete reverse, albeit a half step removed, including all inverted iterations of the original tone row. Challenging little piece!

This Brass Quintet won the 1996 Fine Arts Festival Music Award at Illinois State University, an international competition.   Songs of the Warrior, a Brass Quintet in three movements, utilizes thematic material derived from a twelve-tone row, presented in three contrasting styles.  While the piece stands on its own as absolute music following traditional formal structures, the titles of each movement do suggest a setting befitting the mood or atmosphere evoked by the music.   I. The Cannon’s Mouth Following a slightly modified version of the classical sonata allegro form, this movement presents the thematic material in a freely atonal setting, Much use is made of variations of ancient two note war-horn calls, which would command soldiers to advance into direct combat with an enemy.   II.  Amidst the Fallen The second movement evokes images of the aftermath of battle and the horrors left on the field of war.  Dynamic and rhythmic elements in the music produce a classic arch form.  Melodic and harmonic structures are developed throughout the movement.   III.  Revelry A complete departure in style from the previous movements, Revelry features upbeat modal harmony and foot-tapping rhythms.  Thematic material borrowed from the earlier movements is transformed to conform to the desired atmosphere.  The form of the movement is best described as a hybrid rondo and variations.  The light-hearted mood is perhaps a reflection of the joy found when a soldier returns to his home.   This quintet presents three stylistically distinct movements, yet all are based on the same thematic sources.  The first movement is somewhat cerebral and demands much virtuosity from the performers.  The second is darker, with some almost lyrical melodic lines.  The final movement is nothing if not bombastic.  All-in-all, Songs of the Warrior provides a little something for everyone, from Berlioz to Schoenberg, with a little Bernstein on the side.
