SKU: A0.780064

By Billie Eilish. By Billie Eilish O'Connell and Finneas O'Connell. Arranged by Graham Boag. Pop. Score and parts. 18 pages. Graham Boag #6026933. Published by Graham Boag (A0.780064).

No Time to Die is a the twenty-fifth instalment in the James Bond film series produced by Eon Productions. It features Daniel Craig in his fifth and final outing as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. It is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear, Jeffrey Wright, Léa Seydoux, and Christoph Waltz reprise their roles from previous films, with Rami Malek, Lashana Lynch, Dali Benssalah, Billy Magnussen, and Ana de Armas joining the cast.

The theme song is sung by the American singer Billie Eilish. In January 2019, Eilish told her management that she wanted to be involved if any Bond things come up…whatever we have to do we will do. When the opportunity did arise, the pair jumped into action to book a recording studio, but it left them intensely uninspired and suffering from writer's block. Following this lacklustre day in the studio and they ended up writing and recording the song in a tour bus in Texas, after Finneas came up with an initial chord progression; in just three days the song was written and recorded. Prior to this, the siblings had a meeting with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, who sent them the script for the opening scene in order to give them a bit of inspiration, which Eilish said was so cool and really, really helpful.

Finneas claimed it was useful to go back to listen to previous Bond themes to ensure they were on the right track and did not copy or recreate something which had already been done before, adding that there are few things in your career that are as desirable as doing a Bond song. We did not take the opportunity lightly and worked as hard as we could to prove ourselves. Eilish also revealed that Daniel Craig himself had a major role in vetting the submissions.

Composed by Richard Wagner. Arranged by Edmund Morgan. Concert,Opera,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 13 pages. Edmund Laurence Morgan #2991497. Published by Edmund Laurence Morgan (A0.976682).

Selig wie die Sonne... is a quintet extract from Wagner's only mature comic opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Despite being a departure from his more serious works the music is still typically romantic and as intense as his other works.

In this arrangement for Brass Quintet the vocal lines of the quintet are divided amongst all the players - each instrument takes over the principal solo line at some point during the extract.

Composed by Richard Wagner. Arranged by Randall Malmstrom. Classical,Opera,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 87 pages. Gordon Cherry #6566335. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811253).

The Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg is one of the most popular of Richard Wagner's orchestral works. Its majestic, lyrical aura of goodwill and benevolence lifts one's spirits.

It was premiered in 1868 in Munich and is Wagner's only comedy and only opera based on his own story with the characters having no supernatural or magical powers.

Randall Malmstrom has brilliantly arranged a 7-minute version of the Prelude for an 11-part Brass Ensemble of advanced performers in the following instrumentation:

3 Trumpets in C, 4 Horns, 3 Trombones, and Tuba

Composed by James Bland. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Folk,Spiritual,Traditional. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #424503. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619).

James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer.  He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions.  Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer.  Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.”  His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years.

Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect.  Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived.  Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms.  One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport.

This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction.   The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba.  Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint.  Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880.  Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country:  softly and tenderly.  The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction.

There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement.  Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff.  Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes.  The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major.  Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66.

Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would also like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter "Sweetwater Brass Press" (without the quotation marks) in the SheetMusicPlus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.)

Composed by Guy d'Hardelot (1858 – 1936). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Holiday,Romantic Period,Spiritual,Wedding. Score and parts. 18 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #6072651. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808703).

This song is a great piece to play for a general concert. But it really shines in matrimonial settings. The fact is: No wedding is complete without the performance of Because.
Helen Guy, the daughter of an English sea captain and a French singer, was born at Château d'Hardelot in France. She entered the Paris Conservatory at age 15, and in her early 20s composed a musical setting for Victor Hugo’s Sans toi, which gained some popularity. She composed over 300 songs using the name Guy d'Hardelot. She was also a noted piano accompanist. After marrying W.I. Rhodes, she settled in London and taught singing. As a composer, she is best remembered for Because (Parce Que), for which she wrote both the music and the French words. It was first published in 1902 with English lyrics by Edward Teschemacher and has since been recorded many times by many different artists.
This arrangement was derived from the 1902 Chappell & Co. score in C major for piano and voice. For the most part, however, the musical setting is original and different. Throughout most of the piece, Horn in F carries the melody with Trombone and Tuba providing an arpeggio accompaniment. Trumpets 1 and 2 play a syncopation figure for the opening and the end but during the majority of the arrangement they provide an antiphonal response to the melody. The opening is marked Poco Adagio with a suggested metronome setting of 76, but the tempo does vary rather frequently. All notes are well within the range of each instrument; e.g., B-flat Trumpets’ highest note is G at the top of their staff, while Tuba’s lowest note is A below the staff. All-in-all, this arrangement is a beautiful and poignant setting for an old favorite, a real crowd pleaser.
Completed in 2020, performance time for Because runs about 3 minutes, 22 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Marry You is a pop song featuring strong influences of doo-wop and soul music. The recording focuses on spontaneous marriage and therefore, since its release, has frequently been used as a proposal song. The song is by American singer and songwriter Bruno Mars from his debut studio album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010). I was asked to make this arrangement for a wedding and would be perfect should you be booked to perform at any events such as this in the future. This arrangement is accessible enough to be tackled by youth bands, and would also add a lively piece of pop music to your repertoire. Duraction: 3.30 www.maxstannardmusic.com @MStannardMusic .

Versatile Brass Old Time Collection

This is another arrangement from the concert I was asked to put together a few years ago to commemorate WW1 . I was asked to arrange a selection of music that was heard during the conflict, and to supplement that with songs from between the wars and from WW2... I arranged quite a few...

Suitable for those summer small group jobs that are becoming ever more popular in the UK, particularly for lower section and non-competing bands

We'll Meet Again is a 1939 British song made famous by singer Vera Lynn with music and lyrics composed and written by English songwriters Ross Parker and Hughie Charles. The song is one of the most famous of the Second World War era, and resonated with soldiers going off to fight as well as their families and sweethearts.

The song gave its name to the 1943 musical film We'll Meet Again in which Dame Vera Lynn played the lead role. Lynn's recording is featured in the final scene of Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film Dr. Strangelove, and was also used in the closing scenes of the 1986 BBC television serial The Singing Detective. British director John Schlesinger used the song in his 1979 World War II film, Yanks, which is about British citizens and American soldiers during the military buildup in the UK as the Allies prepared for the D-Day Invasion.

The obligato euphonium part can be omitted if required. The vocal line is also on the 1st Cornet line so this could be played as a standalone item.

SKU: A0.802639

Composed by Mike Batt. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Contemporary. Score and parts. 12 pages. Peet du Toit #6076847. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802639).

Michael Philip Batt, LVO (born 6 February 1949) is an English singer-songwriter, musician, arranger, record producer, director, conductor and former Deputy Chairman of the British Phonographic Industry. Having achieved substantial international success as a solo artist he is particularly known in the UK for creating The Wombles pop act, writing many hits including the chart-topping Bright Eyes, and discovering Katie Melua. He has also conducted many of the world's great orchestras, including the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony and Stuttgart Philharmonic in both classical and pop recordings and performances.

Bright Eyes is a song written by Mike Batt and performed by Art Garfunkel. It was written for the soundtrack of the 1978 British animated adventure drama film Watership Down. Rearranged as a pop song from its original form in the film, the track appears on British and European versions of Garfunkel's 1979 Fate for Breakfast and on the US versions of his 1981 album Scissors Cut. It was the biggest-selling single of 1979 in the UK, remaining at number one for six weeks and selling over a million copies there. Richard Adams, author of the original novel is reported to have hated the song. A cover of the song was later used in the television series of the same name explicitly as its theme song.

Here is a lovely version thereof for a brass quintet and drum set, with the euphonium as soloist in the verses, harmonising by the French horn, muted 2nd trumpet for effects, the first trumpet in the choruses and the tuba supporting with excellent base lines. Your audiences will be intrigued, wanting to hum along!

SKU: A0.767277

Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 79 pages. Lyons Music Services #3218695. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767277).

As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs.

Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor).

The songs starting from no 8 form a set of 6 to which Monteverdi gave a separate title Sestina Within this set of songs Monteverdi creates a little dramatic episode which foreshadows many of the developments that we find in his early operas: Monody/recitative, dialogue between chorus and soloist, a tendency to give the high parts strong melodic lines and a clear division of the roles of the singers.

For the time being, until someone asks, I am not going to release the separate songs from Sestina individually as some of them are a little short.

A sestina is a complicated verse form of six stanzas each of six lines with rules about repeating the last line of the first stanza. The poetic form is of little use to us as instrumentalists, but the dramatic mourning, cries of anguish and the feelings of loss embodied in the music will come through regardless of the lack of words.

As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.
