Quinteto para Metales is a three-movement brass quintet. The first movement, Moderato fantasioso, is episodic and phantasmagoric in nature. Commences with a flamenco fanfare like motif in the first trumpet. Incisive rhythmic patterns, repetitive and fluctuating motives emerge and collide in paired and contrapuntal fashion. The second movement, Sandungeo, is in complete contrast to the first. This modal movement utilizes Caribbean and Hip-Hop dance motifs to discern a livier, sunny and festive milieu. Just like in a Jazz ensemble, there are sections in which each instrument is called upon to solo against a rhythmic basso continuo. Rhythmic and melodic motifs from the first two movements are used to construct the final movement: Coral gótico. The recurring coral theme and the transformed motivic material recalls and conjures cyclic unity and closure for the whole work.
