Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808689 Composed by W. Benton Overstreet (1888-1935). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Graduation,Holiday,Jazz,Traditional. Score and parts. 30 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #4331333. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808689).      William Benton Overstreet did it all-played piano, wrote songs, led bands. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since.     This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper.     For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments.     Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64.     This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, would be very interested in your comments; contact him at lessmith@ufl.edu. Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808694 Composed by Alexander R. Reinagle (1799-1877). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Christian,Easter,Holiday,Sacred. Score and parts. 22 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #4798569. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808694).     British composer Alexander Robert Reinagle wrote this melody about 1836 and named it after the church where he was organist, Oxford's St. Peter-in-the-East. First published as a musical setting for Psalm 118, it was adapted to John Newton’s How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds in 1861 and then to the hymn by John Oxenham (William A. Dunkerley), In Christ There Is No East or West, in the early 20th Century.    While some sources specify that the St. Peter melody should be played without any festive fanfares, this brass quintet version does contain a few ceremonial flourishes.    Most players will have little or no difficulty with this piece. The andante moderato tempo should be interpreted as somewhere in the vicinity of quarter note = 92. Most of the rhythm patterns involve quarter and eighth notes, with a few 16th-note passages scattered throughout. Trumpet 1’s highest note is its high A; tuba’s lowest is G below the staff. Otherwise, the music remains well within the normal playing range of all instruments.     This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 13 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1123447 Composed by Nathan Grocholski. Classical,Contemporary. Score and parts. 65 pages. Nathan Grocholski #724258. Published by Nathan Grocholski (A0.1123447). The basis of this piece was centered around the complex emotions of cats in which we observe in our every day lives. With regards to this piece especially, there were three cats that I based this composition on, and their names are Storm, Zany and Tremor. Each miniature is a representation of a certain type of emotion that each of these cats is known for expressing. The first movement is for my favorite cat, Storm, and is titled, “Precious Storm.†Going back to my earliest memories of writing songs, I re-translated an old tune that I used to sing into a brass quintet miniature and dedicated to him, for he is the best cat. The second miniature is titled, “Mouse on a String,†and is supposed to portray the same energy that one would see from a cat in chase of a toy mouse being constantly propelled around the air from one end of a string, which is one of Storm’s favorite things to do. The third movement is called “Zany the Scaredy-Cat,†which is exactly the type of cat that Zany is. Always fearful and skittish, Zany sneaks around the house to avoid human contact at all costs. The fourth movement is titled “You Stuck, Zany?†This is named after a short video clip in which Zany finds herself stuck in the fireplace and struggling to get out. Once she frees herself, she runs away as fast as she can. The fifth movement is called “Passive-Aggressive Tremor†for the final cat, Tremor. Tremor likes to instigate conflicts with the other cats, but once the tension arises, he backs away, which can also be heard within the intense build ups and anti-climatic drops within the music as well. Finally, the sixth movement is called, “King Tremor,†in which is the boldest sounding of all the pieces, for when it does come to conflict, it is usually Tremor who comes out on top, outsmarting the other two cats.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.801499 Composed by Mykola Leontovych. Arranged by Connie Boss. Christian,Christmas,Spiritual. Score and parts. 8 pages. Connie Boss #6050997. Published by Connie Boss (A0.801499). This arrangement contains all new lyrics as the original lyrics have copyright on them. The melody does not, so we get to keep the same melody, while I have added an intro and have parts for brass that differ some from the original. Verse 1 of the lyrics are about the birth of Jesus. Verse 2 of the lyrics reflects caroling as it contain titles and lines from other public domain songs. I think you will enjoy these new lyrics almost as much as the original, especially if wanting to be more about His birth. cdboss@cvalley.net. Lyrics below:

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767273 Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 16 pages. Lyons Music Services #3218683. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767273). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. The final song from Lamento d'Arianna tanslates as Ah! Who does not even answer! Ah! Who is deaf to my laments (pleas) Another song of a young man being turned down by his lover. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.803397 By Carly Simon. By Marvin Hamlisch. Arranged by Robert Fisco. Contemporary. Score and parts. 12 pages. Robert Fisco #3545919. Published by Robert Fisco (A0.803397). Brass Quintet arrangement of Nobody Does It Better from The Spy Who Loved Me, one of the films in the popular James Bond series. This hit song was made famous with Carly Simon singing, and for brass players, Mnozil Brass included it in their Blofeld show, which features a number of songs from the James Bond movies. This is a great slower, more relaxed sounding piece that makes a great addition to any program. The first trumpet part has a section suggested to be played on flugelhorn (not required - it can also be played on a standard trumpet). Approximate length: 2 minutes and 45 seconds.

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.726435 Composed by Various. Arranged by Kenneth Baird. Christian,Christmas,Standards. Score and parts. 24 pages. Kenneth Baird Music #6092095. Published by Kenneth Baird Music (A0.726435). Many have loved the duet arrangements found in the original collection of 12 Christmas Duets for Bass Clef Instruments arranged by Kenneth Baird. Volume 2 is now available! As in the original collection, this is a delightful collection of intermediate to advanced-intermediate level duets based on traditional Christmas carols. They are challenging at times (not for beginners) without being overwhelming; at times joyful, at times uplifting, at times serene. There's even a very jazzy version of Go Tell It on the Mountain! In addition to being a joy for friends to play together, they are a great resource for teachers to play at lessons with their students, they are are suitable for informal Christmas performances, and many are appropriate for church services. Note: the duets in this collection have NOT been arranged to be fully compatible with Mr. Baird's duet collections for other instruments. Instead, these have been arranged specifically for bass clef wind instruments (trombones, euphoniums, and/or bassoons). This collection does include the duets found in previously released Five More Christmas Duets for Bass Clef Instruments by Mr. Baird. Included in Christmas Duets, Volume 2, are: Carol of the Bells, Ding Dong! Merrily on High, the First Noel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Jingle Bells, Joy to the World (a more traditional version than found in the original duet collection), We Three Kings, Angels We Have Heard on High, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and In Dulci Jubilo (Good Christian Men Rejoice). If you are looking for simple harmonizations of Christmas Carols, this collection is not for you. If you are looking for something more, you've come to the right place.

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.931693 Composed by Dr. John D. Swan. Concert,Jazz,Ragtime. Score and parts. 26 pages. Trombacor Music #6270169. Published by Trombacor Music (A0.931693). Feature your fabulous trombone player with this jazz style quintet composed by Dr. John D. Swan. The trombone solo is accompanied by the quintet throughout. There is a jazz section for the improvising trombonist to demonstrate her/his skills. If the trombone player does not improvise, a Lead Sheet with the changes for other improvisers in the quintet to use is included. Here is another feature of this work: if no one improvises in the quintet, but you still want to feature the trombone solo, markings in the score and parts explain how to omit the jazz improvisation section and take an Optional D.S. back to letter A, and then jump to the Coda. A Raggy Boogaloo is an audience pleaser where your quintet of 2 trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba can perform an up tempo jazzy ragtime piece. This work fits well in school demonstration concerts, on the concert stage, or in concerts in the park when weather permits. When performed at tempo with all repeats, and the full jazz improvisation solo section, the piece is 9 minutes and 25 seconds long.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808687 Composed by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Holiday,Romantic Period,Wedding. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3872461. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808687).     Brahms completed Six Pieces for Piano in 1893, just four years before his death. It was the second from last work he would write for solo piano, an introspective composition that he dedicated to Clara Schumann. To four of the six pieces he attached the label Intermezzo. Although the term originally defined a composition that was inserted between two other pieces-say, the movements of a suite or the acts of an opera-Brahms wrote them as independent works. And of these, the most popular is this, the Intermezzo in A major, andante teneramente. As described on the website Favorite Classic Composers, It's a sweetly melancholy piece, with a strong tinge of melancholy.    Except for a few items, this arrangement is not technically difficult. For the most part, Trumpet 1 plays the melody. Some of the notes are relatively high, the highest being C6 (high D for B-flat trumpet); there are several of those. Trumpet 2 has one brief A5 (high B). Trombone carries the heavy load; it has lots of oodle-oodles in the form of up-and-down eighth notes and triplet figures plus one F2. In the tuba part the range of notes is E1 to F3 and it contains a number of octave jumps. This is a beautiful piece, but it does require that each musician listen to the other four while playing.    This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 55 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, would be very interested in your comments; contact him at lessmith@ufl.edu or leave a review on the SheetMusicPlus website.
