Having been informed that a Waffen-SS commander has been captured by local members of the Resistance, an SS Panzer battalion is sent to the small village of Oradour in an alleged search for the kidnapped officer and Partisans’ weapons. At two o'clock on Saturday 10th, the midday calm is shattered by the appearance of German troops led by Major Diekmann at the southeastern entrance to the village. Soon after, all seven hundred villagers are assembled on the fairground. Women and children are herded and locked into the church, whereas men are marched in groups to nearby barns and crammed inside. While the village is being plundered, all men are machine-gunned by soldiers, and then the barns are set alight. A smoke bomb sets the church on fire too, and women and children trying to escape through the windows are mowed down as they make it outside. Marguerite is wounded on her way out, but she manages to hide in the bushes and stays there overnight until she is finally rescued the next afternoon. Then, she will face the aftermath: few of her fellow villagers have survived the slaughter… (Alfons Conde)

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767275). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. Here, the song is describing One woman amongst the others, honest and beautiful. Now, there's flattery for you! There is a subtitle to this song Concertato nel clavicembalo - Conducted from the harpsichord. Obviously, this is not possible in this transcription. The continuo part has been incorporated into the rests of all of the parts, without swamping the leading voices. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. O viva fiamma has fairly simple harmonies, so I was able to reduce it to 5 parts.O viva fiamma is a duet for two sopranos, The title translates as O living flame and is a passionate - and quite vivid - description of the act of love. All the o - o - o-ing is quite graphic! Good job the words are missing from this version!The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

Composed in 1893 for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, this is a full transcription of the Second Movement of Symphony no. 9 The New World for Brass Choir. The piece uses the popular spiritual like melody sometimes referred to as the Going Home melody. The arrangement mostly uses the the Horns and Flugel Horn to bring this melody across. There is a middle contrasting section where the trumpets and trombones can shine, and then the Going Home melody comes back to finish the piece. Instrumentation is 3 Trumpets, 1 Flugel Horn, 4 French Horns, 2 Trombones, 1 Bass Trombone, 1 Euphonium, 1 Tuba, 1 Timpani.

It is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear, Jeffrey Wright, Léa Seydoux, and Christoph Waltz reprise their roles from previous films, with Rami Malek, Lashana Lynch, Dali Benssalah, Billy Magnussen, and Ana de Armas joining the cast.  The theme song is sung by the American singer Billie Eilish. In January 2019, Eilish told her management that she wanted to be involved if any Bond things come up…whatever we have to do we will do. When the opportunity did arise, the pair jumped into action to book a recording studio, but it left them intensely uninspired and suffering from writer's block. Following this lacklustre day in the studio and they ended up writing and recording the song in a tour bus in Texas, after Finneas came up with an initial chord progression; in just three days the song was written and recorded. Prior to this, the siblings had a meeting with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, who sent them the script for the opening scene in order to give them a bit of inspiration, which Eilish said was so cool and really, really helpful.Finneas claimed it was useful to go back to listen to previous Bond themes to ensure they were on the right track and did not copy or recreate something which had already been done before, adding that there are few things in your career that are as desirable as doing a Bond song. We did not take the opportunity lightly and worked as hard as we could to prove ourselves.
