Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #3579897. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522154). Your Favorite Christmas Hymns and Carols for Brass, Book 1Arranged for brass by Colin Kirkpatrick Here’s a brand new collection of best-loved Christmas hymns and carols arranged for brass, to brighten up your next Christmas event. They are presented in a set of two books and include full four-part instrumental scores plus parts for 1st B flat trumpet, 2nd B flat trumpet, horn in F (with a separate optional part for horn in E flat), trombone and/or tuba. The tuba part is also optional because it either doubles the trombone part or plays an octave below. Both trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff in the bass clef at concert pitch. The arrangements can be used with brass quartet, brass quintet or brass ensemble. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It could be used as the basis of an accompaniment which means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. The arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a concert or service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The arrangements been written in brass-friendly keys as often as possible. While the hymns mostly use the traditional harmonies, the carols have been treated more freely. Book 1 includes the following 19 titles: Angels from the Realms of Glory (Melody: Gloria); Away in a Manger (Melody: Mueller); Unto Us a Child Is Born (Melody: Puer Nobis); Christians Awake! (Melody: Yorkshire); Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly (Melody: Nos Galan); Go Tell it on the Mountain; Good Christian Men, Rejoice (Melody: In Dulci Jubilo); Good King Wenceslas (Melody: Tempus Adest Floridum); I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In; It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (Melody: Carol); Little Jesus, Sweetly Sleep (Melody: Rocking); O Christmas Tree (Melody: Tannenbaum); O Come all ye Faithful (Melody: Adeste Fidelis); O Little Town of Bethlehem (Melody: Saint Louis); O Holy Night (Melody: Cantique Noël); Silent Night (Melody: Stille Nacht); The Holly and the Ivy; We Wish You a Merry Christmas and What Child is This? Arranged by Richard Decker. 20th Century,Blues,Contest,Festival,Jazz,Multicultural,World. 56 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #772105. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1171832). From the Music of Black Composers Series is this arrangement of the third movement Humor from William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony for a brass choir of 4 B-flat trumpets, 4 horns in F, 3 trombones, euphonium and tuba. Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the flavor of the Blues and folk music to the symphony. For Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution he incorporated into a symphonic work. Brass Band Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1095398 Composed by William Grant Still. Arranged by Richard Decker. 20th Century,Blues,Classical,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,World. 61 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #699415. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1095398). This is a brilliant arrangement of the first movement Longing of William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony  for a brass choir of four B-flat trumpets, four horns in F, three trombones, euphonium and tuba. William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in October 1931 at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the melancholy flavor of the Blues to the symphony. For William Grant Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution, separate from the spiritual and popular jazz, and he wanted to incorporate it into a symphonic work based on Western classical symphonic instrumentation and forms. As part of the early 20th Century Harlem Renaissance in New York City, this work was enthusiastically received across the USA and overseas. Pair this brass choir arrangement of the first movement Longing with the third movement Humor also at Charles Decker Music Press to enliven a concert with colorful rhythms, soulful melodies and blues harmonies. Beyond brass ensemble programs feature your band or orchestra brass section on this memorable and exciting arrangement. “The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808682 Composed by Turner Layton (1894-1978), Henry Creamer (1879-1930). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Holiday,Jazz,Pop. Score and parts. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3454039. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808682).      After You’ve Gone, composed in 1918 by Turner Layton (melody) and Henry Creamer (lyrics), was a hit from the beginning. Al Jolson introduced it to live audiences, Marion Harris’ record went to #1 in early 1919, and since then dozens of artists have recorded it . . . and many are still doing so. The words are rather sad-she’s leaving and he’s trying to get her to stay-but played up tempo, the melody is bouncy and fun. That sad-versus-happy dichotomy is incorporated in this arrangement. It begins with a bright, bouncy introduction and first-time-through of the chorus, then slows so the Horn in F can play a melancholic and somewhat schmaltzy rendition of the verse. The Tuba provides a transition back to the upbeat chorus, and we are again off to the races. Layton’s melody slips and slides from one instrument to the next (with the Tuba getting an entire iteration all to itself!), until the pace again slows for a 4-bar reminder of the sentimental verse, which then gives way to a rousing Dixieland-like closing.

Brass Ensemble - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522189 Composed by Various. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Christian,Christmas,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score and parts. 129 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6403993. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522189). These arrangements of favorite Christmas carols are sure to brighten up your next Christmas event. The publication consists of full scores for each hymn plus separate instrumental parts and an optional simplified keyboard part. All the arrangements are in four parts, reflecting the traditional SATB voicing. The parts include 1st trumpet in B flat; 2nd trumpet in B flat; horn in F; horn in E flat; trombone and optional tuba; optional bass in B flat and bass in E flat. There are also two optional baritone parts in B flat (TC) and C (BC) in case you need them. They are the same as the tenor part. In some carols, you might prefer to assign any baritones to doubling the bass or doubling the melody an octave lower. The baritone part in C is also playable by trombone. The trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff. Of course, you can use any number of instruments to a particular part. The optional keyboard part has been simplified and whenever possible limited to single notes in the left hand part and no more than two-note chords in the right. Using the keyboard part, you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. The scores and all the parts are contained in a single 129-page PDF file.Because the music has been set in brass-friendly keys, the arrangements are not necessarily with other Colin Kirkpatrick arrangements published by Glyn Joseph Editions. This collection includes the following favorite carols: Angels We Have Heard On High (Gloria); Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming (Es ist ein Ros entsprungen); O Come, O Come Emmanuel (Veni Emmanuel); The First Noel; Ding Dong! Brass Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.999423 Composed by Carlo Gesualso. Arranged by Eric Wilson. Concert,Renaissance. Score and parts. 14 pages. Woodrow Edition #5798361. Published by Woodrow Edition (A0.999423). Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, Musician and Murderer! That’s not a news headline (though it would be quite a good one) but the title of a book by composer Peter Warlock which I read avidly after first encountering the Italian composer in a lecture at the University of Liverpool in the 1980s. We were studying the Italian madrigal, which was not really my thing until our lecturer threw Moro Lasso into the mix. Its opening chords seemed so incongruous – unlike anything we had heard – and are as striking today as they must have been in 1611 when first published in Gesualdo’s 6th Book of Madrigals.More or less immediately after that lecture I arranged the piece for the Seras Brass Quintet which I had helped form. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited, and certainly didn’t include anything by Gesualdo! The arrangement really benefits from a church-like acoustic where you can make the most of the dramatic built-in silences. The tuba part lies quite high and is very playable on a trombone if need be. Even to modern ears there are some strange sounds and I trust that all the ‘wrong’ notes are Gesualdo’s rather than mine – do let me know if you think otherwise!

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767215 Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 307 pages. Lyons Music Services #3087101. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767215). Monteverdi - The Fourth Book of Madrigals 1603In this book, Monteverdi continues to develop the techniques and writing practices that would eventually form the first opera and his Stile Nuovo. The polyphony becomes more complex and more tonal and the interdependence of the parts more striking. He is experimenting with more dissonance but also moves towards more tonal writing. Although a far cry from the I IV V and minor of the modern pop song, he is nonetheless helping to push forward a more diatonic type of harmony with a more dramatic tonal and harmonic structure that goes much more towards true word painting than his previous books.  All 20 madrigals are here: 1. Ah! Dolente Partita – Oh, Sweet Parting!2. Cor Mio Mentre Vi Miro – My Heart as I dream I turn into you. 3. Cor Mio Non Mori? E Mori – My heart did not die? And it died4. Sfogava con le stelle – He dallied with the stars 5. Volgea l' anima mia – Volgea my soul, so dear and sweetly shining 6. Anima mia perdona – My soul forgives 7. Che se tu se ' il cor mio – That if you are as good as my heart 8. Luci Serene e Chiare – Lights, serene and clear 9. La piaga c'ho nel core – The plague is in the heart 10. Voi pur da me partite – You do not mind me, though 11. A un Giro Sol de' Begl' Occhi – At one glance of good eyes 12. Ohime se Tanto Amate – Alas! If you like it too much 13. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1049261 Composed by Friedrich von Flotow. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Classical,Pop,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 18 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #653628. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1049261).      The first performance of "Martha, or The Market at Richmond," a romantic comic opera by the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, took place in Vienna in 1847. Subsequent presentations were performed in a number of other languages, including Hungarian, Czech, English and Italian. Two of the most memorable arias from Martha are “The Last Rose of Summer” and “Ach! so fromm.” “Last Rose” was, of course, based on the poem by Thomas Moore. “Ach! So fromm,” known more familiarly by its Italian lyric, “M'appari, tutt'amor,” was an original composition by Flotow, a piece he had composed for an earlier opera and inserted into Act 3 of Martha as Lyonel’s tenor solo.      In 1955, The Crew Cuts, a Canadian pop singing group, recorded a song titled “Mostly Martha.” Written by Dorcas Cochran (words) and Ralph Sterling (music), it charted in early 1956. As so many pop song writers have done, Sterling borrowed the melody from a piece of classical music: “M’appari.” While “M’appari” and “Mostly Martha” share the same melody, the words and sentiment are quite different. Lyonel laments that Martha has left him, while The Crew Cuts jauntily proclaim, “Mostly Martha, Mostly Martha. What has she got? She's got the most.”      This brass quintet arrangement takes a middle ground. It follows closely the basic structure of Flotow’s operatic aria but does so in a sort-of up-tempo manner and with a great deal of variation in the accompaniment. It’s not really The-Crew-Cut-style “She’s got the most,” but it’s certainly more positive than Lyonel’s song of longing. The piece starts with a suggested tempo of 90 bpm, changes to 80 at section C, and speeds up to 92 at the end. All instruments get a turn playing the melody, and there are no really tricky rhythmic patterns. There are, however, grace notes, rallentandos, an “a piacere” and a number of fermatas. All notes are, for the most part, within normal playing range of each of the five instruments, with two exceptions: near the end Trumpet 1 has an A above its staff, followed two measures later by a high B-flat.      Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 2 minutes, 45 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt to him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.
