Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets in C with Brass Ensemble and Timpani is a rarity for the Baroque era when solos for brass instruments were almost non-existent. The valveless nascent Trumpets were very difficult to play. But as with Bach, there must have been a few brave souls who mastered the instrument and inspired the composer to write his inspired work.

As with most of Vivaldi's concertos, this one begins with a quick and sparkling movement to catch the attention of the audience and to showcase the bright tones of the solo trumpets. This is followed by a contrasting brief and languid second movement. The final movement is back to brilliant mode with quick energy and intricate passages for the soloists. (Encylopedia Britannica).

Niels-Ole Bo Johansen has created a very unique arrangement for the two solo Trumpets with Brass Ensemble and Timpani...unique in that the accompaniment instruments are almost all conical (except for the trombones who can blend nicely into that pool of round sounds). This gives the listener a sharp contrast between the brilliance of the soloists and the plush sound of the accompaniment.

The 6 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. The instrumentation is for: 2 solo Trumpets in A, 2 Cornets in B-flat, Flugelhorn, 2 Horns in F, 3 Trombones, Euphonium, 2 Tubas, and Timpani.

Symphony No. 2 by Wilhelm Stenhammar was composed between 1910 and 1915. It was a personal struggle for him, and it is now considered one of the great Nordic symphonies of the era.

The Finale from Symphony No. 2 for Brass Ensemble, Timpani & Organ features a grandiose double fugue, displaying Stenhammar's preoccupation with counterpoint as a way of overcoming his doubts about his compositional knowledge.

Holst's 7-movement Suite, The Planets was written between 1914-16 and its first version was scored for two pianos except for the Neptune movement, which was written for organ alone. The music is the first ever composed with a fade-away ending using a womens' chorus. Later, Holst completed his orchestration of the 7-movement Suite, which has become one of the most popular works in the repertoire.

Mr. Sauer has brilliantly scored this movement of about nine minutes in length for 14-part brass ensemble with Timpani and Glockenspiel. This concludes his arranging of the complete suite for Large Brass Ensemble. The entire 7-movement Suite is also available for sale as a complete set on our website.

Symphony No. 4, also known by the composer himself as the Romantic was written in 1874, but revised several times and premiered in 1881 in Vienna. The subtitle actually does not refer to romantic love, but a medieval romance such as some of Wagner's operas.

The movement titled Scherzo is full of adventure and vitality with a relaxed middle section. Bruckner himself hinted that the Scherzo movement was a Jadthema or hunting theme and Volkfest or people's festival. The hunting horns are calling, the brass are blowing their fanfares and it is a good day to be hunting.  The main feeling from this movement is a strong feeling of the great outdoors.

Mr. Johns has arranged this work for 14-part brass ensemble including optional Timpani.

Richard Wagner wrote his great opera Tannhäuser in 1845. The Fanfare from Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien for Brass Choir and Timpani is a sophisticated and brilliant work by French master Claude Debussy from his incidental music for the 1911 mystery play written for the famous actress Ida Rubenstein by the Italian author Gabriele D'Annunio, The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The Fanfare is taken from Part III of the work and is titled Le Concile des faux dieux (the Council of the false gods).

Charles Decker has done a fantastic job of editing the work for performance.

This is a festive arrangement for brass and timpani, with optional soprano descant.  This arrangement includes an introduction and three settings of the tune.  Llanfair is commonly set to the Easter text Christ the Lord is ris'n today and the Ascension text Hail the day that sees him rise.  The organist/pianist can use the standard harmonization of this tune along with every setting.  It is also possible to use a second brass choir to play the first setting as the foundation accompaniment, with the other settings played on top of the first.

Mercury, The Winged Messenger, written in 1916 is the 3rd movement of Gustav Holst's iconic 7-movement suite. Waldteufel composed his beautiful Skater's Waltz in 1882, having been inspired by the Cercle des Patineurs or 'Rink of Skaters' at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. The wonderfully orchestrated work is especially graceful, invoking scenes of winter and skaters falling to the ice.
