Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets in C with Brass Ensemble and Timpani is a rarity for the Baroque era when solos for brass instruments were almost non-existent. The valveless nascent Trumpets were very difficult to play. But as with Bach, there must have been a few brave souls who mastered the instrument and inspired the composer to write his inspired work.

As with most of Vivaldi's concertos, this one begins with a quick and sparkling movement to catch the attention of the audience and to showcase the bright tones of the solo trumpets. This is followed by a contrasting brief and languid second movement. The final movement is back to brilliant mode with quick energy and intricate passages for the soloists. (Encylopedia Britannica).

Niels-Ole Bo Johansen has created a very unique arrangement for the two solo Trumpets with Brass Ensemble and Timpani...unique in that the accompaniment instruments are almost all conical (except for the trombones who can blend nicely into that pool of round sounds). This gives the listener a sharp contrast between the brilliance of the soloists and the plush sound of the accompaniment.

The 6 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. The instrumentation is for: 2 solo Trumpets in A, 2 Cornets in B-flat, Flugelhorn, 2 Horns in F, 3 Trombones, Euphonium, 2 Tubas, and Timpani.

Symphony No. 2 by Wilhelm Stenhammar was composed between 1910 and 1915. It was a personal struggle for him, and it is now considered one of the great Nordic symphonies of the era.

The Finale from Symphony No. 2 for Brass Ensemble, Timpani & Organ features a grandiose double fugue, displaying Stenhammar's preoccupation with counterpoint as a way of overcoming his doubts about his compositional knowledge.

Ross Holcombe has done an amazing job arranging this mammoth movement for large Brass Ensemble, Timpani, and Organ. The instrumentation is for: 4 Horns in F, 5 Trumpets in C, 3 Trombones, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani & Organ.

The 16 ½-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Waldteufel composed his beautiful Skater's Waltz in 1882, having been inspired by the Cercle des Patineurs or 'Rink of Skaters' at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. The wonderfully orchestrated work is especially graceful, invoking scenes of winter and skaters falling to the ice.

Mercury, The Winged Messenger, written in 1916 is the 3rd movement of Gustav Holst's iconic 7-movement suite. It is light, flitting and scherzando in style.  Mr. Sauer has used a very ingenious scoring technique for the brass to keep the music flowing for the very fast, long phrases used by the composer. • 4 minutes in length for advanced performers. Holst's masterpiece, the Suite #1 in E-flat originally for Military Band has been brilliantly transcribed for 14 part Brass Ensemble, Timpani & Percussion by Angus Armstrong of the Capital Brass in Ottawa, Canada. 

The work is in three movements: 1. Chaconne, 2. Intermezzo and 3. March, about 11 minutes in length total for advanced performers.

Instrumentation: Piccolo Trumpet, E-flat Trumpet, Trumpet 3 & 4 in Bb, Horns 1 & 2 in F, Trombones 1 & 2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani/Triangle, Percussion 1 & 2.

Mascagni's opera Cavalleria Rusticana is considered one of the great masterpieces of the repertoire.
