In writing the Ricercare In B Flat Major For Brass Orchestra, it came to my attention the works of Giovanni Gabrielli, Palestrina and other composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The fugues of Johann Sebastien Bach and his contemporaries are the descendants of the ricercare in that the themes are treated contrapuntally. The main feature in the ricercare and the fugue is the melodic imitation of the principal theme. Unlike the fugues of Bach that includes the countersubject, the ricercare has no regular countermelody to provide musical interest to the theme. Another feature to discover in the Ricercare In B Flat Major is the concerto nature, where the trumpet ensemble plays against instruments of lower pitch registration and the French horn chorus plays against instruments of different tone colors. The concluding section of the piece includes all instruments playing together.In performing the work, the brass orchestra performs together on stage. There also may be a possibility of having the work performed in different parts of a hall to give listeners an idea of the concerto-like works of Gabrielli’s sacred symphonies. This idea may be decided at the discretion of the conductor and the ensemble.The work is suitable for concert use and may be used to teach students the compositional techniques composers of previous centuries used in composing their works.

This is the only known six-voice fugue in music literature; and despite the title, Bach himself thought of it as such, often referring to it as his Prussian Fugue.  By the time of Bach, distinctions had nearly disappeared between ricercari and fugues.  Most organists, however, stick to the painfully slow tempi of ricercari in performance, and speeding it up a bit in this arrangement makes it much more accessible to players and listeners alike.  The FINALE audio extract is a bit misleading, as there is no sound bank for flugelhorns; but you certainly get the drift.  It's a bit of a haul; a C trumpet part has been included as a substitute for the Eb trumpet called for in the score.  This piece would work well as a brass ensemble chart.

Bella Ciao (Goodbye Beautiful) is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by the seasonal female rice paddy workers in Northern Italy in protest to the harsh working conditions.  The song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the Italian resistance movement by the partisans who opposed the Nazi occupiers between 1943 and 1945. Versions of Bella Ciao continue to be sung worldwide as hymns of freedom and resistance. Written during the Covid -19 Pandemic, Variations on “Bella Ciao’ was inspired by the scenes of music- making by Italian musicians during the darkest days of the pandemic. From rooftops, balconies and deserted piazzas, people continued to express themselves in testaments to the human spirit. They are plentiful in Somerset in the West Country of England Though similar in appearance to a gargoyle, a hunky punk is purely decorative and has no other functional purpose whatsoever!! Unlike the gargoyle, which serves to drain water off the roof through its mouth.The theory behind hunky punks and grotesques in general, was that churches were designed to reflect the balance between good and evil, reminding worshippers of the narrow path leading through life. As a result, for every saint or animal that was intended to signify purity and ‘goodness’, there was also an ugly creature to signify evil and ‘badness’. Scored for 2 Trumpets in B flat, Horn in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba. This piece is in concert C minor and begins with a medieval type of fanfare which occurs throughout. What follows is a haunting theme with lots of flattened 5ths and several discords to represent the uncomfortable nature of this statue. The staccato and accent direction in most of the piece gives the impression of walking on eggshells not knowing what lies around the corner! Then a brief legato section of the fanfare appears to provide a calmer atmosphere before eventually returning to the main theme and big ending. Set at Advanced intermediate level although an intermediate player maybe fine with it. However, the youtube link has the full score for you to assess suitability. It is around 4 mins 30 in length and would be a great addition to a repertoire.Price is for the full score and parts.

I was at college in the late 70’s (RNCM) and the brass dep fave groups were EWF (and Maynard), we formed a band, brass and rhythm section called Brass Injection where the members of the band arranged EWF/Maynard/Blood Sweat and Tears/Steele Dan and the like. (5 tpts, 4 troms, tuba, rhythm section). We colleges giggled, Manchester gigged, and after 4 years we ended up in Ronnie Scott’s. In The Stone seemed to be a must for brass band and difficult dictation and I don’t like to leave things out or simplify. So I’m starting an EWF collection with September and Fantasy to come soon. The semiquaver syncs will take some time to give it the relaxed feel especially in the bass dep. Here’s to the memory of Brass Injection and RNCM days.

The Four Vignettes were the first brass piece that I composed just to sound beautiful.I will never forget the look on Dave Kirk’s face when we finished reading it the first time. We were in a room at Rice University where he teaches after a Texas Brass Quintet rehearsal. This was back when both Dave and I were in the band. I asked him and the hornist if they would stay after the rehearsal to read through my new trio. It was these Four Vignettes.When I finished, I KNEW it was mission accomplished because Dave’s face lit up. He had a smile of satisfaction not unlike a smile someone would have after a very satisfying meal.My compositions have been different since then. More like this Four Vignettes piece and less like the experimental stuff I was writing in the 90’s.
