The publication consists of full scores for each hymn plus separate instrumental parts and an optional simplified keyboard part. All the arrangements are in four parts, reflecting the traditional SATB voicing. The parts include 1st trumpet in B flat; 2nd trumpet in B flat; horn in F; horn in E flat; trombone and optional tuba; optional bass in B flat and bass in E flat. There are also two optional baritone parts in B flat (TC) and C (BC) in case you need them. They are the same as the tenor part. In some carols, you might prefer to assign any baritones to doubling the bass or doubling the melody an octave lower. The baritone part in C is also playable by trombone. The trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff. Of course, you can use any number of instruments to a particular part. The optional keyboard part has been simplified and whenever possible limited to single notes in the left hand part and no more than two-note chords in the right. In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals. The 17th song, Io pur verrò begins as follows: I will come when I am thirsty and you will have my thirst for love. It concludes the second 'scena' within this book, a group of three linked songs (Nos 15-17) which is also available as a single download as the singer conquers his lady's reluctance.As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments. The individual madrigals are available separately. This sweet little march – more of a cakewalk really – was originally written for piano by the famously eccentric French composer Erik Satie but it suits the brass quintet very well. I made this arrangement as long ago as 1987 when I didn’t know much about the composer. Many years later I visited his former home, now a museum, in the Normandy port of Honfleur. It’s well worth a visit and gives a valuable insight into this fascinating composer.The piece makes a delightful short interlude or encore and I’ve tried to share the interest around the players, although the tuba is not exactly pushed to its limits!

The first adventure was a kayaking trip on the Charles River in Boston, MA and the second was a tubing trip on the Huron River in Ann Arbor, MI. While lazily floating down these rivers with my friends, I imagined us with our instruments, laughing and playing. It is a joyful image that sticks with me to this day, however, I invite you to imagine your own fantasy while listening to this piece! A slightly different version of this piece premiered on May 25th, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA. This was one of two original compositions that I performed for my senior recital in high school.
