They are simple in style & light in character.  The work is a depiction of a lullaby sung to a stuffed Elephant.  This little gem of 3 1/2 minutes has been beautifully edited for advanced performers by Ralph Sauer for Tuba quartet (2 Euph’s + 2 Tubas).  The bottom part features a great Elephant style solo.

Ideal for beginner students in classical music with the help of a teacher. The original essence of the work was maintained, with adaptations in tonality and tessitura of the instruments. Can be used in professional and academic recitals, didactic material and repertoire for ensemble practice. Boccherini was born in Lucca, Italy, and became a cello virtuoso. He moved to Spain, where he worked with the Spanish royal family. The third movement of the quintet, minuet and trio, is famous and often played as an independent piece. The work is beautiful and has good partial writing for all instruments, with melodies and rhythms typical of Boccherini. Suitable for concerts and home performances.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792552). Four Kuehn (Keen) Guys was written for David Kuehn (pronounced ‘keen’) the head of the Tuba department at the University of North Texas. Professor Kuehn asked the composer to write a challenging work for his class.... and he did! As a Tuba quartet, all parts run the gamut of range and difficulty. It is also very playable by four bass Trombones and in any combination of Tubas or bass Trombones thereof. The quartet is in A-B-A format beginning with a cute sounding march followed by a very beautiful lyrical section and concluding with a repeat of the march section. It is a very satisfying work to perform and to listen to. The work of about 4 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

This easy arrangement for tuba quartet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.
