This is an arrangement of Chopin's Nocturne in D flat major (Db major), Opus 27, no. 2. It's arranged in the key of D major much like the well-known Sarasate transcription. While the Sarasate arrangement is suitable for highly advanced players, this arrangement can be enjoyed by intermediate to advanced players. You may find some bow markings and fingerings a bit redundant but I put in this level of detail to help my violin students. It was the Devil's Trill Sonata that immortalized Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) although said work is just one of a vast number of concertos and sonatas for strings and especially for his instrument, the violin. The present 'Sonata in Re maggiore per Violino solo' is a technically demanding, yet not cluttered work. The slow movements, the introductory Andante cantabile and the Largo headed TASSO, composed over the melody of a Venetian gondola song, give the soloist the opportunity for cantabile playing. The playful Minuetto clearly breathes the spirit of the post-Baroque era while the Allegro assai coming second mixes strongly gripping passages with beguilingly sentimental ones. The characteristic ambiguous movement is repeated after the Minuetto, thus completing the solo sonata.

Yes, making music with others is one of the best things about being a violinist, and a string duo, trio or quartet is great for weddings and other private or corporate events.  But sometimes because of constraints of availability / space / budget – or just for the thrill of it – we need to go it alone.  That’s when music for unaccompanied violin (not merely solo violin) comes into its own.

Here’s Bach’s celebrated Air (or Aria) for polyphonic violin alone, with the famous bass line baked in – a bit like in his Andante from the solo violin Partita No. 2 in A minor.
