Violin Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1018956

Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. 2 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078707. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018956).

Programme Notes:

This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles.

The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.

The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners.

Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.

Composed by Carson Cooman. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. 12 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3030921. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533610).

Sonata for Solo Violin (2005) was composed for and is dedicated to David Fulmer. It is in two
movements.

The first movement, Logos, was inspired by a paradoxical contrast present at Cisco Beach on
Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, USA. On one side of the sandy beach are the powerful
pounding waves of the unbounded Atlantic ocean. On the other side sits one of Nantucket's most
tranquil freshwater ponds. Within one field of vision exists this contrast.  It is a lyrical movement which contrasts slow melodic gestures with very fast running passages. The outer two sections explore the development of a series of melodic cells that are unfolded at the start of the work. The middle section features a long-breathed lyrical melody with lower register decorations and interruptions.

The second movement, Synodos, is a journey. The Greek title is built from the Greek words for with [sun] and road/way[hodos] and refers to a fellow traveller on a journey. It is a personal journey -- between performer and violin.
It ismystical in conception with two extended slow sections framing a dramatic and jagged one in the center. The musical material and gestures are gradually transformed over time -- as periods of motion are contrasted with periods of extreme stillness and resonant inactivity.

A resonant acoustic is preferred for a performance of the work.

Composed by 馬水龍 Ma Shui-Long. Contemporary,World. 28 pages. SpringAutumnmusic #2010515. Published by SpringAutumnmusic (A0.961982).

Dialog between Violin and Piano

My inspiration came from the delight of having an open conversation with good friends. A piano solo begins the conversation, followed by a response by the violin and two of them enter into the conversation. The piano and violin each performs different themes and rhythms with individual personality. First they take turns to express themselves, and then their monologues interact with each other. Although there might be disagreement and argument between them, this do not last long. The changes in speed imply the transitions of their emotions. An open conversation is free of forms. I honestly believe that sitting close together and having an open conversation is extremely precious and delightful, and is a common experience shared by everyone. The whole piece is immersed in a harmonious atmosphere of peaceful conversation. The violin and piano gently wave their goodbyes at the end.

Composed by Gary Noland. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. 13 pages. Freeland Publications #3236555. Published by Freeland Publications (A0.980415).

Violin Part to Waltz Fantasy for violin & piano Op. 87. Score is available separately for purchase. for Duration: ca. 15-20 minutes. Review of performance (Aaron Berenbach, Northwest Reverb): Like an André Rieu opium dream, Noland's waltz slowly emerged from a morass of sound, solidified into a lush, decadent, Viennese waltz before dissolving and reforming again and again. Like Bernstein, Noland made great use of the familiar, in this case the easily recognized waltz form, but made it personal, unique, and extremely interesting in his interpretation.
