Glances, Repose for unaccompanied violin was written in 1979 and the performing time is about seven and a half minutes. It is in one movement comprising four sections. Section two is quiet and still and flanked by sections displaying striving and progression. The fourth and final section is also energetic, but is pinned down by pedal points.
The title reflects this form: it suggested the image of the face of an Indian dancer who glances with the eyes but whose other facial features remain passive. This image is appropriate also because it has associations with the wide-ranging and outward-directed motion of the outer sections, as well as with the 'glancing bow' of the fourth section.
Two melodic ideas provide the basis of the music, one active and twelve-tone, the other, passive and more limited. The work requires many types of expression and technique from the performer.
