Dieses Auftragswerk für den 5. Internationalen Violinwettbewerb Leopold Mozart in Augsburg ist im Berlioz-Jahr 2003 eine liebevoll-ironische Hommage an Harriet Smithson, die berühmte englische Darstellerin der Ophelia in Shakespeares Drama Hamlet und Ehefrau von Hector Berlioz, ausgehend von einem Zitat aus einem Brief Franz Liszts an Berlioz: Sie hat dich inspiriert, du hast sie geliebt, du hast sie besungen, ihre Aufgabe war erfüllt! Ein englisches Theater kam nach Paris und führte Shakespeares Dramen auf, welche bis dahin dem französischen Publikum völlig unbekannt waren. Ich wohnte im Odéon der ersten Vorstellung des Hamlet bei. Ich sah als Ophelia Harriet Smithson, welche fünf Jahre später meine Frau wurde. Die Wirkung ihres wunderbaren Talents oder vielmehr ihres dramatischen Genies auf meine Phantasie und mein Herz kann nur mit derjenigen verglichen werden, die der Dichter selbst auf mich ausübte.
