Published by MP Sheet Music (A0.546857). “O xote das Meninas� is a xote by Luiz Gonzaga and Zé Dantas, originally recorded on February 5, 1953, becoming one of the most popular pieces in their repertoire. Gonzaga re-recorded it six years later, for his LP “Meus Sucessos com Zé Dantas� and an instrumental version, in 1972, for the LP “São-João Quente�. According to Zé Dantas: His verses begin by singing the mandacaru, a cactus that does not depend on the rain to bloom, a phenomenon that, when it happens in the dry season, makes the caboclo believe that the thunderstorm is approaching. This superstition led us to establish a simile between the mandacaru flower, a prodromal sign of the rain that arrives giving the earth fecundity, and the girl who, getting sick of the doll, becomes a woman.
