Six sonatas for unaccompanied viola were composed expressly for viola, and are not transcriptions of music for other instruments.  The style of composition is tonal and expressive, easily accessible to the audience for classical music.  The sonatas are also excellent teaching tools, as they present the player with technical and musical challenges which are useful in themselves, and as preparation for future musical learning.
