The text of this well-known song first appeared in the early 19th century, and it was published as a shape note hymn by William Walker in his 1840 edition of The Southern Harmony. The melody is drawn from an English ballad that was 150 years old by then. This version was sketched in June 1995 and completed in February 1996. It was first played on March 10, 1996 at Glenwood Moravian Community Church (Madison, WI), by organist Richard Benson and me. It was revised slightly in 2022 for this edition. What Wondrous Love Is This is dedicated to the memory of my grandmother, Thelma Allsen.

This peaceful Lenten piece is another in a series of works for the younger, less experienced trombonist and organ. Based on the hymn Glory Be to Jesus, this is the hymn tune known as Wem In Leindenstagen or Caswall.  The range and rhythmic requirements are minimal for the young player, and the organ part plays a big role in support of the soloist.  This would be perfect for Lent, Ash Wednesday, or Holy Week services.  Parts included are for trombone, baritone bass clef, baritone treble clef, trumpet, and tenor sax.  It was recorded with the composer playing both organ and trombone (thanks to the organ's MIDI recorder)!

This peaceful Christmas carol will be the perfect chance for you to feature a younger, less-experienced trombonist or other instrumentalist. Based on the Christmas carol Infant Holy, Infant Lowly, the hymn tune is is the traditional Polish tune W Zlobie Lezy. This work is another in series for the younger instrumentalist, with limited range, easy rhythms, and an easily-playable organ part that supports the musician very well. This is the third movement of a suite written for the younger, less-experienced trombonist.  With a chromatic, chordal accompaniment, this will give these trombonists a chance to work on some new notes and triplet patterns.  The other two movements, 1. Foundation Fanfare and 2. Psalm on Picardy, are based on hymn tunes, making this suite appropriate for church or recital use.  Each has a very limited range and easier rhythms, most of which are introduced by the organ accompaniment.  Give that young musician a chance to shine!  In addition to the organ and trombone parts, I have included a treble clef part, for those Baritone TC, Tenor Sax, or Trumpet players too!
