The text of this well-known song first appeared in the early 19th century, and it was published as a shape note hymn by William Walker in his 1840 edition of The Southern Harmony. The melody is drawn from an English ballad that was 150 years old by then. This version was sketched in June 1995 and completed in February 1996. It was first played on March 10, 1996 at Glenwood Moravian Community Church (Madison, WI), by organist Richard Benson and me. It was revised slightly in 2022 for this edition. Maggiolata is the Italian name of an ancient Spring Festival celebrated on May 1st, hence the subtitle Song of May. Jeno Hubay, Head of the Violin Dept at the Budapest Academy of Music, wrote this piece to be as light and celebratory as a perfect spring day. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. Most of the expression markings are my own additions. I have scored it as an Instrumental Solo with an Organ accompaniment but a Piano accompaniment could be easily adapted from this. This arrangement, with an octave and a half solo range, is easy enough to be accessible for most players and its beautiful melody will have you singing and longing for spring.  3 page score, 1 page part5:00 minutes with repeatrecording is Violin and piano version

Romance for Trombone and Organ, Op. 78, No. 2 is from 4 Pieces for Violin and Piano by Jean Sibelius, composed around 1915 during the Great War. It is a staple of the violin repertoire. The wistful character of its very hummable melody is a great example from the age of parlor music, composed for amateur performance in the home and enjoyed by all ages.This 3 ½-minute work has been beautifully arranged for Trombone and Organ by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen. There are two versions included with this arrangement: one for advanced performers that goes up to high D's and another for intermediate performers in bass clef and with a moderate range only to high G.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792536). Lament for Trombone and Organ by composer Jeremy Niles Kempton is a serious and lyrical work of about 6 minutes in length for advanced performers. The original version is for trombone and string orchestra.  It was composed and performed within a 2 week period at a memorial concert given for Helen Manheim, a violist in Mr. Kempton's Island Chamber Symphony on Long Island, NY.  Ms Manheim died rather suddenly and her passing left the composer with a deep feeling of regret at having taken her and so many other ICS musicians for granted. The piece consists of 3 lengthy phrases.  The first epitomizes the grief at her passing.  The 2nd presents her life and consists of 3 phrases, all starting the same but each striving higher.  The final section is her legacy, what she leaves behind.  Orchestral score and parts are available form Cherry Classics. The live performance features Mr. Kempton on the trombone.

This peaceful Lenten piece is another in a series of works for the younger, less experienced trombonist and organ. Based on the hymn Glory Be to Jesus, this is the hymn tune known as Wem In Leindenstagen or Caswall.  The range and rhythmic requirements are minimal for the young player, and the organ part plays a big role in support of the soloist.  This would be perfect for Lent, Ash Wednesday, or Holy Week services.  Parts included are for trombone, baritone bass clef, baritone treble clef, trumpet, and tenor sax.  It was recorded with the composer playing both organ and trombone (thanks to the organ's MIDI recorder)!
