Chorale Prelude on Rockingham (composed 2018, duration ca. 4’ 10�). The text most commonly associated with this tune (When I survey the wondrous cross) is reflective, and inward looking. In it the writer marvels at the depth of God’s love for us, and is humbled by the vastness of our challenge in reciprocating it. We can only stand in awe at the impossibility of our task. Likewise the task of the arranger who tries to capture, in music, a fraction of these feelings. The piece begins very simply and grows more complex, with each statement of the hymn tune more elaborate than the last. Flowing triplets keep the motion going, and the rich harmonic palette is accentuated by several unexpected modulations. The mood is serene, though not always quiet, and often with uncertainty bubbling right under the surface.

Also known as Luther's Cradle Hymn (tune Mueller), this American Christmas carol melody is much admired. This new arrangement for organ sees the melody in the right hand with gentle 'cradle rocking' left hand 8th notes above the held pedal notes anchoring the slow moving harmony. The end result is a gentle, reflective and musically satisfying arrangement of a much loved Christmas carol. Use an expressive 8' stop to solo the melody and balance it against an open 8' flute (or 8' and 4' flutes if the 8' is too quiet). Couple the left hand to a quiet 16' Pedal stop. This calm and gentle meditation is based on the beloved Gregorian chant hymn Veni Creator Spiritus suitable for all kinds of occasions but especially for Pentecost. The piece is unified by a rocking refrain presented in the right hand part. Chant phrases appear on a solo registration accompanied by colorful harmony in the left hand and pedal parts. This extended organ piece uses a remarkably small amount of material; just two chords, triads of C and F sharp, with an added augmented fourth in each. Over these chords, a melody gradually unfolds and is developed and decorated (also appearing in canon at one point in the pedals!). This musical material originates from the same composer's early original setting of the carol Away in a Manger (also available via Sheet Music Plus), which uses the aforementioned harmonies to depict the rocking motion of Christ's crib. Therefore, this organ work is a 'meditation' on this, almost in the manner of a chorale prelude. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for higher standard organists, including advanced students and professional players.
