This spirited composition for organ is based on a medieval Christmas hymn that dates from the late 14th Century and probably had its origins in Germany. Personent Hodie was first published in the Finnish songbook Piae Cantiones in 1582. The Latin text has had many English translations over the centuries, but the one most commonly heard today is On This Day Earth Shall Ring by Jane M. Joseph (1894–1929). An organ solo, this writing uses the contemporary song for creating a toccata using ninth chords making a fuller texture. A stirring start or finish to almost any service, this composition could finish a concert.  While challenging, the music falls into the hands well. This piece is fun to play and presents in sound and composition a piece that certainly matches the text of the song. Definitely professional level piece.  I am using this piece for the Easter postlude this year. Performance time is 5:50 at 56 bpm. An SATB and organ version of this piece is being created.

Charles Williams (1893 - 1978),was a British composer and conductor who contributed music to over 50 films and wrote a considerable amount of light music, including 'Devil's Galop'.  'While I Live' is a 1947 British drama film,  best remembered for its musical theme The Dream of Olwen composed by Charles Williams, which became hugely popular in its time and is still regularly performed. Orginally for piano and orchestra this verssion is for a 2 manual organ with pedals. It is playable on a Church instrument or equally suitable for a home  instrument, or organ club recitals.
