Er nennt den Ort Bet-El (Bethel), Haus Gottes (Gen 28,10–19 EU).“Näher mein Gott zu dir” is one of the most famous Christian hymns. It is based on the 1841 poem Nearer, My God, to Thee by the English poet Sarah Flower Adams. The poem was set to music with various melodies, the best known being Bethany by Lowell Mason. The chant is often sung or played at funerals, especially in the English-speaking world, and has been on everyone's lips since the film Titanic. The biblical background of the text is the story of Jacob's dream of the ladder to heaven in Genesis. Jacob has gone to sleep on a stone and finds strength in his severe distress through the dream vision. He calls the place Bet-El (Bethel), house of God (Gen 28:10-19 EU).

This is another in a series of works for the younger or less experienced instrumentalist, with a limited range, easy rhythms, and an easily playable organ part that provides great support to the young player. In addition to the trombone and organ parts, there is a treble clef part provided that can be used by a trumpet, baritone, or tenor sax player. It was written and recorded on a two manual instrument, with the composer playing both parts (thanks to the organ's MIDI recorder). I hope you will feature the younger players in your church!

My Prelude on the hymn tune Revive Us Again (We Praise Thee O God) was conceived for a three-manual organ and has a somewhat challenging pedal part.  The harmonic idiom reflects the influence of certain 20th century techniques (such as building chords by fourths), which create a sound world that, while still tonal, embraces somewhat greater dissonance than traditional practice allowed.  Modern ears though are accustomed to, and even enjoy, such sounds.  The introduction and interludes are based upon a rhythmic motive taken from the hymn tune, which itself is treated canonically at one point.  In another instance, even two different phrases are vertically combined.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

From the beginning of the piece to the hymn section, one shall hear a minimalistic trait in the accompaniment. The opening part also contains a melody that paints a darker picture of life, but gradually builds up excitement toward the section where my arrangement of the famous hymn ALL MY HOPE ON GOD IS FOUNDED by Herbert Howells (1891-1982) is stated. After the playing of the hymn, the piece becomes gradually quieter until the end, symbolizing the assurance of peace and love. Organ registrations and tempo indications are only suggestions. The piece is suitable for recital purposes and may be performed in church-related events.
