Composed by Thomas R. Schadl. Concert,Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score. 29 pages. Thomas R. Schadl #6201739. Published by Thomas R. Schadl (A0.912505).

Theme and Variations on TRSCH is a piece that is suitable for concert use. As one plays the piece, one shall realize that each variation has its own character. The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.

Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders.

Each variation explores moods and the work is organized this way:

Main Theme: m 1-6           TRSCH is stated in the bass.

Variation I:     m 7-22         Fugato

Variation II     m 23-50       Mystical quality and lyrical

Variation III   m 51-88       Scherzo, lyrical section, scherzo

Variation IV   m 89-116     Toccata

Variation V     m 117-224   Mystical mood, scherzo, mystical mood

Variation VI   m 225-297   Toccata, brief lyrical section, toccata

Variation VII   m 298-317   Variation I but at a slower speed.

My Variations on St. Christopher (Beneath the Cross of Jesus) require a wide range of technical prowess from relatively easy (Variation II) to advanced (Variation VII).  The Theme presents the unadorned hymn tune with an original 4-part harmonization.  Variation I is another 4-part setting but with a more rhythmically active acompaniment in the lower voices.  Variation II, a duo for the hands alone, is in the dominant key where the tune is accompanied by an unrelenting stream of triplets.  Variation III is a 3-voice canon in which the tenor and pedal bass imitate the soprano, though with a certain amount of intervallic freedom.  Variation IV is a trio in which the middle voice presents an ornamented version of the hymn tune.  Variation V is a brief fughetta, while Variation VI presents the tune in the pedals against quietly undulating triplets in the hands.  The final variation (entitled Introduction and Fugal Fantasy) is by far the most challenging and employs considerable chromaticism toward the end.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangememts of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Go forth, my heart, and seek delight

That well-known chorale by Paul Gerhardt (Melody: Johann Georg Ebeling) is used to create some special and serious variations with famous motives of several composers like Bach, Beethoven, Johann Strauss or Mozart, closing with a sparkling and happy final. The composer had played that work in several concerts and every time, the listeners where very happy with the music.

My Variations on the hymn tune St. Elizabeth (Fairest Lord Jesus) present the tune with an original harmonization followed by four variations.  The first two settings (Theme and Variation I) give out the tune in unaltered form, undergirded by two different harmonizations.  Variation II is a duo cast in baroque style with an ornamented melody accompanied by a rhythmically repetitive pattern in the manual bass.  In Variation III, a continuously moving accompaniment played by the feet and the left hand provides a backdrop to another ornamented version of the hymn tune, again in a somewhat baroque style.  The final variation is more challenging to play.  After a brief introduction, the tune appears in the soprano voice, harmonically supported by the alto and pedal bass, while the left hand provides a continuous stream of eighth-note triplets.  After a couple of modulations, the final section (marked grandioso) presents the tune with a 4-voice harmonization punctuated at the end of each phrase by a trumpet-like rhythmic pattern played on a state trumpet stop.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

On Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele. Composed by Naji Hakim. Downloadable. Duration 11 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q555044. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q555044).

English • German.

These variations are based on the choral “Freu dich sehr, o meine Seeleâ€. Variation I, Maestoso, presents a solemn, canonic statement of the theme enveloped by dense, closely-knit harmonies. Variation II, Allegro, is clothed in polyphonic lines reminiscent of Bach’s “Orgelbüchlein†chorales. Variation III, Vivace, is a playful bicinium with the cantus firmus featured in the soprano line, as the bass bounces along in a staccato duet. Variation IV, Adagio, displays rich chromatic harmonies which form a lush backdrop for the pedal solo. Variation V, Vivace, features the chorale in detached left hand notes while the right hand and pedal provide a playful accompaniment. In Variation VI, Andante, the melody vacillates between minor and major keys as syncopated left hand chords and pizzicato bass accompany the cantilena. In the concluding Variation VII, Presto, the left hand proclaims the theme in block chords as the right hand provides an exuberant garland of sixteenth notes while the pedal provides rhythmic drive with tympanic accents.

Composed by John Burkett. Arranged by John Burkett. Classical,Contemporary,Sacred. Score. 15 pages. John Burkett #935708. Published by John Burkett (A0.1350883).

My Variations on Holiness (Take Time to Be Holy) require a wide range of technical prowess from near beginner (Variation II) to advanced (Variation IV).  The Theme presents the unadorned hymn tune, but with a new harmonization.  Variation I is a canon in which the imitative entries for each phrase occur at varying intervals.  In Variation II (for the hands only) the unadorned tune is accompanied by an unrelenting stream of sixteenth notes in the relative minor key.  In Variation III (entitled Pastorale) each phrase of the tune is preceded by a freely composed introductory segment.  The final variation (entitled Toccata) is by far the most challenging.  It moves at a rapid tempo in 5/8 meter with individual phrases of the tune appearing sporadically, often in an ornamented guise.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Immortal, invisible, God only wise describes God’s omnipresence and omniscience, with His hand present in all things on earth in all aspects of life. The four variations follow the four verses of text written by Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908) as found in the Hymnal 1982. I leave it to your artistic imagination to interpret how the melodies and harmonies of each variation paint the text.

Much like my Opus 2 (Partita Vom Himmel hoch), this set of variations was initially conceived as an improvisation. As such, some rubato should be employed in performance. Registration suggestions are indicated in the score though are by no means binding. To maintain the atmosphere of wonderment established by the first variation, the tempo of the final variation should not be too fast.

Composed by Vidas Pinkevicius. Christian,Contemporary,Sacred. Score. 8 pages. Vidas Pinkevicius #3540609. Published by Vidas Pinkevicius (A0.909270).

In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.

I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).

I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.

Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.

But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.

However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.

So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.

I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.
