This organ-arrangement (Partita) is about the song Der Mond ist aufgegangen. First you hear a mystical chorale playing with fifths, then a cantus firmus in alto register, a cantus firmus in tenor register and finally the well-known chorale slightly improvised. The evening song is a poem by Matthias Claudius, which is one of the most famous works of German literature and is known as a Christian song under the title of the first verse Der Mond ist aufgegangen (Behold the moon has risen) in the setting by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz.

Dieses Orgel-Arrangement (Partita) habe ich über das Lied Der Mond ist aufgegangen geschrieben. Zuerst hört ihr ein Quinten-Choralspiel, dann einen Cantus firmus in Alt Lage, einen Cantus firmus in Tenorlage und zum Schluss den bekannten Choral leicht improvisiert. Das Abendlied ist ein Gedicht von Matthias Claudius, das zu den bekanntesten Werken der deutschen Literatur gehört und unter dem Titel des ersten Verses Der Mond ist aufgegangen in der Vertonung von Johann Abraham Peter Schulz als christliches Lied bekannt ist.

“Old Hundredth” probably is one of the most beloved and well known hymns. It’s heard in churches throughout the whole world. Of course there are many compositions written on this tune. A short while ago, my friend Ausra created a beautiful Toccata over it. You can listen to that one here. But, there is never enough music in the world, so I tried to create my own version. I deliberately choice for contrasting harmonies in both hands to create some tension and excitement. The Cantus Firmus is played with the pedals. I hope you like it!

Matthias Weckmann, born in Niederdorla near Mühlhausen (Thuringia) in 1616 and died in Hamburg in 1674, was trained as a musician by Heinrich Schütz in Dresden among others. He worked as an organist in Dresden (Schloßkirche) and Hamburg (St. Jakobi). It is particularly for the Jakobi organ that he wrote his elaborate and virtuoso organ works. Our new edition in the renowned series 'Masters of the North German Organ School' faithfully transfers the works which survived in letter tablature, providing a reliably edited urtext. Volume 1 contains the cantus firmus-based works, 8 authentic verse cycles with 2-7 movements each in which chorale melodies such as 'Es ist das Heil uns kommen her', 'Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ)' or the 'Magnificat' are varied, as well as a cycle on 'Ach wir armen Sünder' attributed to Weckmann. Volume 2 proves him to a master of concertante organ music, containing 3 works with pedal (Fantasia, Fuga and Praeambulum in D) as well as several moderately difficult works to be played on manuals only (6 toccatas, 5 canzonas). This hymn prelude takes the 18th century Irish tune for the hymn Thy Kingdom Come and is suitable to be played before or after church services on the organ. Services such a Christ the King or services during advent are suitable times to play this piece. The style of the music is inspired by the traditions of the Baroque period, as it uses a cantus firmus melody which is accompanied by contrapuntal textures. .

In this brief but boisterous organ postlude on the chorale Mit Freuden zart (subtitled ...renn zum Ausfahrt!), the manuals play a dense jumble of imitated motives from the chorale, while the pedals thunder out the cantus firmus in long notes. The c.f. has been modernized a little by occasionally sharpening the 4th degree and flattening the 6th and 7th! Also contributing to the modern flavour of the piece are the frequent 2-against-3 cross-rhythms, which result from the tripling of the eighth-note values in the triple-time chorale melody.

Written on September 15, 2023, this is a warm and gentle meditation over Nearer, God, to Thee. The piece, written in E flat major, starts with a short introduction with strings, followed by a rythmic ostinato with a Flute 8'. After that, the Cantus Firmus arises played with the pedals, while the right hand keeps the E flat the whole time (Drone). The piece concludes with the ostinato part. the piece is useful for any lithurgical or any other occasion. The original choral is used in the hit movie Titanic..

San Francesco a La Verna (2014) for organ was written for and is dedicated to Marco Lo Muscio. The work is inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi and his time on the mountain at La Verna (where today sits a Franciscan monastery and sanctuary dedicated to him). It is told that during his time on the mountain, St. Francis received the stigmata in 1224.

The piece is subtitled cantus e toccata per organo and falls into three sections: 1) San Francesco in preghiera (St. Francis in Prayer); 2) San Francesco riceve le stimmate (St. Francis receives the stigmata) and 3) San Francesco glorifica Dio (St. Francis glorifies God.)

I performed the 2005 world premiere of Daniel Pinkham's St. Luke Organ Book, and composed/performed this piece as a prelude. In Nomine (aka the Little Time Machine) is based on the traditional tune In Nomine as a cantus prius factus. The little time machine moves through 600 years of musical style in 3 minutes. It begins as a 12th Century treatment, and morphs - period by historical period - all the way to the 20th Century. The premiere occurred at the Historic St. Luke's Organ Benefit Concert in 2005.
