First you hear a mystical chorale playing with fifths, then a cantus firmus in alto register, a cantus firmus in tenor register and finally the well-known chorale slightly improvised. The evening song is a poem by Matthias Claudius, which is one of the most famous works of German literature and is known as a Christian song under the title of the first verse Der Mond ist aufgegangen (Behold the moon has risen) in the setting by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz. Dieses Orgel-Arrangement (Partita) habe ich über das Lied Der Mond ist aufgegangen geschrieben. Zuerst hört ihr ein Quinten-Choralspiel, dann einen Cantus firmus in Alt Lage, einen Cantus firmus in Tenorlage und zum Schluss den bekannten Choral leicht improvisiert. Matthias Weckmann, born in Niederdorla near Mühlhausen (Thuringia) in 1616 and died in Hamburg in 1674, was trained as a musician by Heinrich Schütz in Dresden among others. He worked as an organist in Dresden (Schloßkirche) and Hamburg (St. Jakobi). It is particularly for the Jakobi organ that he wrote his elaborate and virtuoso organ works. Our new edition in the renowned series 'Masters of the North German Organ School' faithfully transfers the works which survived in letter tablature, providing a reliably edited urtext. But, there is never enough music in the world, so I tried to create my own version. I deliberately choice for contrasting harmonies in both hands to create some tension and excitement.
