Babylon is a tune by William Billings which can be sung as a round or canon. Billings (1746-1800) was an influential leader of the singing school movement in early America and is considered the first American choral composer. David Neff's arrangement for organ solo captures the mournful mood of Billing's tune, which was sung to the text of Psalm 137:1 (By the waters of Babylon, we lay down and wept for thee, Zion. We remember thee, Zion.).

The vigorous German tune Mit Freuden Zart is associated with various hymn texts, including Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above and Lord Christ, When FIrst Thou Cam'st to Earth. Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika was written as a prayer for the freedom and prosperity Africa during a time when most of the continent was dominated by European colonial powers. It later became the anthem of several African countries, and during the presidency of Nelson Mandela, it was folded into the South African national anthem. The song had been banned during the apartheid years because of its association with the ANC. It was the South African counterpart to the role played by We Shall Overcome in the Civil Rights struggle in the U.S. These gentle. reflective variations for organ are appropriate at any time of year, but especially during Black History Month. I wrote this piece to honor the African immigrant families in the church I serve as music director.

This chorale prelude for organ on a familiar hymn tune is flowing and placid, and is perfect for any worship service. The chorale tune is most commonly associated with the hymn text O Word of God Incarnate and is also used for O Jesus, I Have Promised. 
The tune was adapted by Felix Mendelssohn in 1847 from a late 17th-century chorale. He then used it as the basis for the chorus Cast Thy Burden upon the Lord in the oratorio Elijah..

In 2006, I was asked to introduce the hymn Blessed Jesus, at Thy Word (Liebster Jesu) at an American Guild of Organists festival of German hymn tunes. I composed this quiet setting of the famous German hymn tune in an homage to Franz Liszt's organ treatment of the Jacob von Arcadelt setting of the Ave Maria (1862, S.659). I hope I have captured the spirit of Liszt's piece and given it new life in this setting. This chorale prelude is appropriate for any worship service and for wedding prelude music as well.

Here is a gentle reflection on Gustav Holst's famous tune for In the Bleak Midwinter. It is suited for use in the Christmas season, whether in church services or seasonal music concerts. Holst wrote the tune in 1906 for inclusion in the English Hymnal.

The anonymous hymn More Love, originated in the Shaker community in Canterbury, New Hampshire in the latter part of the 19th century. Several fine choral treatments of this tune have been published, but I felt  a need for a meditative organ prelude on the tune. This is a lovely, sweet 4-1/2-minute piece to use as a prelude to a sacred service, a wedding,  or as a slow-things-down change of pace in a recital program.
