These little interludes are designed for moments in the worship service when the organist is obliged to play short improvisations, yet feels improvisationally challenged. Whether the need is to cover the sound of shuffling feet as latecomers are seated or simply to establish a contemplative ambience, organists will find many uses for these short interludes in all keys. While some organ registrations and dynamic levels are suggested, the organist is advised to select stops that best suit the immediate moment of use. The majority of interludes in the service call for Flute or string celestas and other soft stops. A few of these pieces also present possibilities for using fuller or brighter combinations. It is hoped that this collection will serve well when there is a sudden need for the organist to provide (as a colleague so apply puts it)ecclesiastical traveling music.

Duration: 8 - 16 minutes, 8 pp. Description: The graphic nature of this set of short pieces is designed to elicit cooperative creativity from the performer. With the exception of the last piece — the Chorale — the unorthodox notation is negotiable and open to alteration in consideration of the performer’s inclination and the instrument’s possibilities. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the Études as models for improvisation. Études II and IV, for example, ask the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet map out a clear design for the music. The degree of freedom is considerably more constrained as regards the final Chorale. The pitches, rhythm, length, form are much more specific in this case, although the performer does have great latitude (within suggested guidelines) in choosing registration. The music is generally scored on only two staves. Nonetheless, three manuals are requested for the realization of the Chorale. Pedal keyboard is recommended but not essential. The Pedal is particularly useful in realizing Études I and IV. Wedges and/or weights are necessary for Études III, and may be a useful substitute for the Pedal in Études I and IV. Julien Gracq's novel Au château d'Argol° includes a chapter in which one of the heroes, Herminien, discovers a chapel hidden deep within a forest. Soon ... through the branches, twisted in fantastic arabesques, appeared the grey wall of a chapel hanging in the midst of an abyss. He sees an organ there, and, climbing the steps of the loft, he starts to improvise. Then, from the depts of his disquiet, a sound rose up. The author gives a description of this improvisation that, musically, expresses all the psychological tension that has built up in the course of the novel. The musical work bearing the title of this chapter does not claim to respond the letter of the literary description of this improvisation, which would be as impossible as describing Proust's Sonate de Vinteuil, but it is inspired by both - this description and by the novel itself.

Each lasting a little under three minutes, these chorale preludes are useful as recital repertoire, as well as preludes, offertories, and postludes for church services.
