The three movements of this composition are based on the Christmas carol tune Mueller, also known as Away in a Manger.  While each movement can be performed separately, my intention is that all the movements be played as a unit.  This composition was conceived with a 3-manual organ in  mind.  While the Prelude and Canon are relatively easy, the Fugue is more challenging, as it requires numerous changes of stop combinations via preset pistons.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  This piece is one among several arrangements in my Christmas Carol Series, which includes a number of settings for piano.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for still other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and some for piano.

Barbara Heller dedicated this chorale to the memory of Elke Mascha Blankenburg (1943–2013). Talking about her before the first performance, the composer said: ‘She was open-hearted with a really tender soul, very trusting. Her creativity knew no limits; she was also an almost fanatical campaigner for music by women. In the music you will hear now I have attempted to convey some aspects of her personality: charming, loving, obstinate, committed, volatile, tragic, crazy, untamed, tender and anguished.’ The various sections of this chorale may be performed in a correspondingly contrasting manner: searching, hesitant, visionary, focused, volatile, accusatory, hopeful, etc., with use of rubato and powerful contrasts in dynamic and tone quality. The registration for this edition was devised in the Church of the Resurrection in Fürth. It is a model that may be adapted freely for other organs, perhaps substituting new and different sound features. Also available for clarinet and organ (KLB 99).

Also known as Luther's Cradle Hymn (tune Mueller), this American Christmas carol melody is much admired. This new arrangement for organ sees the melody in the right hand with gentle 'cradle rocking' left hand 8th notes above the held pedal notes anchoring the slow moving harmony. The end result is a gentle, reflective and musically satisfying arrangement of a much loved Christmas carol. Use an expressive 8' stop to solo the melody and balance it against an open 8' flute (or 8' and 4' flutes if the 8' is too quiet). Couple the left hand to a quiet 16' Pedal stop. Sacrificium was commissioned by the St Albans International Organ Festival for what has become one of the most influential organ competitions in the world. It is a demanding 8 minute work that will challenge performers with an abundance of contrasting material whilst still leaving space for individual interpretation. Casken refers to the story of Alban who sacrificed his life to save another Christian thereby becoming the first British Martyr in his programme note and more specifically the act of exchanging cloaks and deception which led to Alban's execution. This idea of taking on a new appearance is apparent in the music as recurring themes undergo transformations, gradually becoming absorbed into new musical textures.

Joe Duddell's music is not bound to any one genre: he has taken on projects with dubstep pioneers, like Nero, alongside commissions for concertos. His ethereal work for solo organ contrasts intricate and highly rhythmic sequences with a slow moving harmonic structure and in the resulting 10-minute work, influence can be heard from both sacred and electronic music. The initial patterns repeat, overlap, and subtly change to create a slowly evolving wash of glorious harmony. Duddell makes use of the varied colours of the organ, beginning with a subdued treble and working to an exhilarating, full bellow. Temporal Keys would make an excellent addition to the repertoire of any enthusiastic organist.
