These eight Chorale Preludes were all written between March and May of 2020, during the worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic. Unlike the earlier companion volumes of shorter English and German preludes, which feature a variety of moods and themes, these American examples all seem to center around the closely related ideas of hope and quiet confidence. While this was not my intention back when I was choosing hymns to work with, I am pleased with the unity of the set. Taken as a whole, they are filled with tidings of comfort and joy.

Stylistically, the preludes range from the baroque bounce of Praise Him, Jesus Our Blessed Redeemer, through the sturdy On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand (with its chords sounding as if they had been carved from granite blocks) and a surprisingly delicate I Stand Amazed. There is a fair amount of canonic leading and following in He Leadeth Me; Great is Thy Faithfulness is the expressive heart of the set; and we end by returning to 18th century ritornello models with Blessed Assurance. Through it all I think I have managed to avoid any sense of academic stuffiness - in fact there are several moments which may sound almost playful if not handled rightly.

As with the Shorter English and German Preludes, most of these are between one and two minutes in length, and each fits on one or two pages, arranged so as to avoid page turns. As always, durations and sources are provided for your planning.

“These are written-out improvisations that were a part of the Good Friday noon liturgy at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. It is a service based on stations of the cross from the Anglican tradition, in our case, with a procession to each of nine stations.

At each station there is a mini-liturgy which consists of a reading, prayer, interpretive improvisation on the organ, and the singing of a stanza of a hymn. For the improvisation, I weave in images from the reading with the hymn. For example, at the sixth station, the reading includes the phrase “His yoke is easy�, and the hymn is “Go to Dark Gethsemane.� The improvisation alternates between the theme from the chorus “His yoke is easy� from Handel’s Messiah and a very dark and thick chordal setting of the hymn. The improvisations are full of imagery which are evocative and emotionally charged.�

This is a toccata and fugue in D minor in neo-baroque style. I composed it under the impression of the organ works of Bach, Buxtehude and Johann Peter Kellner. Since the harmonies became more colourful after the Baroque period, I have included a lot of chromaticism in the extended pedal solo. The pedal solo alone can also be understood as a pedal exercise.
I have attached a musical example in which I play the composition on the organ of the Petrikirche in Erfurt (Thuringia).

Renaissance Gladness.  This is written for the younger, less-experienced player, as all three movements feature limited range, repeated rhythmic motives, and easy key signatures.  For example, movement 2. Aria only uses the first three positions!  Now you have an accessible work to feature that young musician, whether for church services, special events, or recitals.  Complete videos of all three movements are on the YouTube channel of OrganGuyPhil (the composer).  Each movement is also available separately here on SMP.

This is an expansive toccata and fugue in F major in neo-baroque style. I composed it under the impression of the organ works of Bach, Buxtehude and Johann Peter Kellner.

This work was composed for Reformation Day, so it has the melody of the chorale Ein feste Burg as its pivot.
Since harmonies became more colourful after the Baroque period, I have included a lot of chromaticism in this work.

This piece is technically extremely demanding, both the manual part and the pedal, which is treated as an absolutely equal voice.
The voices are very dense, so that they are not all perceptible at first hearing. The decisive thing in playing is that the result is something like the one in my recording. It is not necessary to play all the voices, or the spacing of the voices in the right hand can be made more tangible by using the respective octaves.

I have attached a musical example in which I play the composition on the organ of the Petrikirche in Erfurt (Thuringia).

Our customers who usually buy hymn-based organ music have been quite taken with Mr. Stover's original, non-hymn-based pieces! (See his Tambourine, 10-437, for example.) His Blue Prelude is exactly what the title indicates; it's introspective with complex and lush harmonies. An Art Deco� homage to Gershwin, Ellington, and other composers of the ‘30s and ‘40s- it's perfect for an unusual piece on a recital. While we don't exactly rule out using it in worship, it might be a tad too sultry!

This is a set of three variations on the familiar hymn tune, Nun danket alle Gott.  The first variation is presented in mixed meter with rhythmic alterations from the original tune.  The second variation is a simple arrangement with no metric variations.  The third variation is a bold statement, using mixed meter and based on the rhythm of the original tune as written by Johann Crüger.  The audio example includes the first two variations.

Born in Beirut and trained at the Paris Conservatoire, the organist and composer Naji Hakim (*1955) has won numerous prizes both as a creative and as a performing artist. After having worked as an organist in Paris for many years, for example as successor to Olivier Messiaen at La Trinité, he has been composer-in-residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London since 2004. For the 100th anniversary of the Binns organ at the Albert Hall in Nottingham he was commissioned to write 'Fanfare for Nottingham'. The composer designed the work as 'a series of free and energetic variations on the melody of the hymn Nottingham accompanying a merry procession' – it has become a hymnic and effective work, a valuable addition to the organ repertoire.

Franz Liszt composed his lyrical-meditative organ fantasia on the Ave Maria von Arcadelt in Rome in 1863. In contrast to his major virtuoso works, this charming genre piece can even be easily played on smaller (double-manual) instruments, even without swell-organ and reeds. The 'Liszt organ' at the village church of Denstedt near Weimar, which was built by the Peternell brothers in 1859/60 and has survived in its original state, may be used as an example. It did not become known until in 1927 that the Ave Maria attributed to Jakob Arcadelt (around 1505-1568) was a revised version by the composer Pierre-Louis-Philippe Dietsch (1808–1865) who used the melody of Arcadelt's chanson Nous voyons que les hommes which he then harmonized into his own Romantic four-part choral setting and to which he added the sacred text as a contrafactum. Our separate edition wants to make this rather 'poetic', yet quite easy-to-play organ work without any major technical difficulties accessible to a large circle of interested people.
