Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1137387). Psalm 22 is a well-known and loved 8 part a capella choral work by Felix Mendelssohn. I have here arranged it for Organ Solo. Psalm 22 is about a person crying out to God to save him from his enemies, then thanks God for rescuing him. Thus, the first half is in E minor and the second half is in E major. Since it no longer has lyrics to convey the meaning I have used new tempi, dynamics, and registration, and also altered some harmonies and rhythms to add the appropriate interest and emotion. In order to create dialogue on the organ I have used unmetered recitative chant followed by metered antiphon in many places. In another section I use overlapping call and response between the hands and manuals. These are interspersed with 4 part Chorales. The mood constantly shifts throughout in many short sections, but the beauty is in the way they fit together creating harmony and polyphony and dialogued emotions. This is a great 9 minute organ Prelude which bridges the Classical and Romantic eras. 9:15 minutes; 11 pages (Apologies- I was in a hurry to record this, so there are a couple of wrong notes and rhythmic inaccuracies in the recording.).

He then used it as the basis for the chorus Cast Thy Burden upon the Lord in the oratorio Elijah..

The first semiquaver in each arpeggio type phrase in the accompaniment played on the swell is an octave higher than in the original piano accompaniment. This enables the manual part of the accompaniment to be played with one hand on the swell and for the melody to be played on a solo stop on the great or choir with the other hand. For the repeat the solo melody may be played an octave lower on the Gt 8 diapason stop. The arrangement was requested by friends for their golden wedding celebration.

The preludes lend themselves very well to a church service and are excellent pedagogical material.August Freyer (15 December 1801 – 28 May 1883) was a Polish musician and composer, specializing in both performance and composition on the organ.August was born in Saxony in 1801. He moved to Warsaw and began his musical career there as a double bass player. He became organist at the Warsaw Evangelical Church, had the organ rebuilt, and turned his church into a prominent musical location while becoming the prominent organist and organ teacher in Warsaw. He made a tour of northern Germany as an organist, from which he received wide acclaim.August was a musical pupil of Józef Elsner. He became a close associate of Adolf Friedrich Hesse. He promoted Hesse's music to Mikhail Glinka, successful in his performance to the point of reducing his listener to tears. At an early age Stanisław Moniuszko became his pupil, his parents relocated to Warsaw in order to have Stanisław study with Freyer. He died in 1883.Freyer was largely responsible for the revival of organ music in Poland. He was a master at music balance, both homophonic and polyphonic. His playing was appreciated by Felix Mendelssohn and Louis Spohr. In addition to the aforementioned German concerts, he toured Paris to enthusiastic reception. His most famous composition was a set of Concert Variations of which the final-movement fugue is the most recognized.

It is an admonishment to heed the word of the Lord.It is arranged as a solo line with accompaniment, and is thus most suitable for a 2-manual organ with pedals, but could also be played on one manual + pedal.  It is transposed into the easier key of A minor and the texture is lightened somewhat for accessibility.

This reflective arrangement is based on idea the angels have been waiting the millennia for the birth of this infant, recently flying excitedly about with the coming of the baby.  But now Mary is in labor, the head to appear any moment.  All the angels have stopped their flying and are now bent over watching, waiting quietly from above with amazement and awe.  Used for prelude for Christmas Eve communion service.  Fairly easy to play, uses right handing playing two keyboards simultaneously, almost no pedals.  Adds to repertoire by being a reflective vs. usually excited piece. .
