This is a colourful meditation on the well-known hymn tune Old Hundredth. The unity of the piece is achieved by the two-measure refrain which appears between hymn phrases. The harmony explores both G major and G minor modes using spicy 4 note and 5 note chords. This piece will be very effective in liturgical organ playing and recitals whenever contemplative music is desired.

“Old Hundredth” probably is one of the most beloved and well known hymns. It’s heard in churches throughout the whole world. Of course there are many compositions written on this tune. A short while ago, my friend Ausra created a beautiful Toccata over it. You can listen to that one here. But, there is never enough music in the world, so I tried to create my own version. I deliberately choice for contrasting harmonies in both hands to create some tension and excitement. The Cantus Firmus is played with the pedals. I hope you like it!

This is an optimistic and powerful work based on the beloved Old Hundredth hymn tune. The piece is put together using two contrasting ideas - a fanfare-like acclamation and hymn tune in the pedals surrounded with toccata figuration in the hands. The composition will be very effective in liturgical organ playing as a postlude and in concert programs whenever joyful and loud music is desired, at the beginning or at the end. This work for trombone and organ is part of the 2024 Suite for Trombone and Organ, which is geared toward the younger, less experienced player, with works that can be performed at church services and other occasions.  This Festive March on the Old Hundredth is based on the hymn tune, known to most as Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.  It is written in joyful fashion, and could work well as a festive prelude or joyful postlude.  The range is one that a typical high school player (or advanced middle schooler) could play, with rhythms well within the reach of players at that level.  The solo part is well-supported by the organ part, with hopes that rehearsals can be minimal in putting this together for performance.  There are two other movements to this 2024 Suite, both available on this site as well.  Please give that young musician the chance to shine!  Also included is a treble clef part that could be played by trumpet, treble clef baritone, or tenor sax.
