Toccata & Fugue for Organ (2018)Composed by Aris AntoniadesRunning time: approx. 7' 50'' Writing for Organ always seemed like a very distant dream for me. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation.  The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. Put on you alpaca!  This organ solo Christmas winter arrangement takes this hymn through a raging wind storm.  Really!  By putting melody on great flute 8' with no volume fluxuation and the left hand constant moving tritone using Gedeckt 8', the organist has to experiment with increasing then decreasing unpredictable and violent volume changes to achieve the realism of a major wind storm.  Truly, it will become a bleak mid-winter.  I have used it as an offertory last year and will be using it somewhere this Christmas season.  The wind storm makes this a very unique piece, not the standard worship service piece.  Easy to play as it uses no pedal tones, the challenge is extensive use of the swell pedal for only the accompaniment with flute on great the steady volume.  Tune name:  Cranham.

New Organ Music for 2024!  STORM is a Toccata for Pipe Organ.  Its main theme is consisting of sextuplets which should be played in both hands fifty-fifty and a sonorous theme in the pedal and it sounds like... a summer storm.There are suggestions for the registration in the sheet music, but as always they are meant to be guidelines - choose which stops fit your organ best. If you have two manuals start with the Grand Orgue forte and switch two times to the Swells (or whatever you have) with a mezzoforte mix of stops.
