It may also be performed on a large organ, with the condition that the organ should be treated as “ Blockwerk �. The performer should not change the registration in the course of each movement (the registrations given may, of course, be changed if necessary). If the performer wishes to play these works on two seperate keyboards, it would be necessary to have the same registration on each keyboard (ie if mixture on the I, mixtures on the II : reeds on I, reeeds on II etc). If the performer is tempted to add an improvised pedal part, the composer would have no problem with that if it were done with taste.

The title of this piece, which is a palindrome, has an interesting history. In medieval times much was made of things like numerology and words, and one day it was discovered that Ave (Hail) spelled backwards was Eva (an archaic spelling of Eve). Thus Ave Eva was Hail, Eve! and Mary was seen as a type of Eve.

In other words, Ave Eva read the same forwards and backwards, giving us Hail Mary in both directions. This was seen as a miraculous sign and songs and poems were written about it. The piece given here is my original work for pipe organ, and following the lead of the title and history, it gives the descending figure F-E-D to provide the thematic material, developing into a canon-like style, then reverses the figure later to an ascending D-E-F, eventually playfully mixing both versions of the theme before exploding into an exciting end.

The work itself is relatively easy to perform, with perhaps the exception of the duple-over-triplets passage near the end which may require a little more attention than the rest of the piece. For clarity of the lines I have suggested a Principal Chorus, with some contrast provided by passages using Flutes and soft Strings. Thank you for performing this work, and God bless!

For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. As always, sources and timings are included and the score prints in landscape format.
