This general purpose organ solo piece has a very peaceful, bluesy freedom while keeping true to the melody with only minimal additional notes.  This piece is a favorite of my church members in a church where music during the service is restricted to hymns and songs people know.  The only challenge is the first part of second verse with an obligato and accompanying figure both in left hand.  This is also available for solo with flute for the intro and clarinet for the obligato of verse 2 which is very effective--and organ easier to play.

Lili of St. Luke'sbyFran OlsenIn 1990, a small black and white spotted dog, who had been found wandering, abused and sick in Surry County, Virginia, was scheduled to be put down by the Surry SPCA as unadoptable.  Three placements had failed because the young female was too afraid of the people.  Her last chance was Richard Lee Austin, curator of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia.  Austin had reluctantly agreed to look at the small spoodle.  He had just lost a beloved Pekingese of 18 years and did not want to go through the pain of another loss.  Lili, however, immediately seemed to know that this was her person, came directly to him and won his heart.  It was a mutual love affair.Lili went eagerly to work with Dick at the Gift Shop of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia, for the next 11 years.  She was gracious and never intrusive with the visitors.  Small children were able to approach Lili without fear.  She seemed to understand that she needed to be quite still with them.In 2000, Lili became the star of her own book, Lili of St. Luke's:  The Blessing of the Animals.  Written by Fran Olsen, a volunteer at the church, and illustrated by Buttons Boggs, the charming book tells the story of Lili's desire to go to church.  The animals in the church yard scoff at her.  She finally succeeds in going to church for the annual Blessing of the Animals service which commemorates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi.  Since the book was published many children have come to the church to have their picture taken with Lili.Mrs. Olsen, who is also the publisher, has donated a dollar from the sale of each book to be shared with Historic St. Luke's Church and three area humane societies with which Lili has been associated.  Contributions in the first six months of publication were $1200.Lili died on June 7, 2001, from cancer.  A week before she died, she made a personal appearance at a local elementary school.  As always, she was gracious and gentle, even though later it was apparent that she was deathly ill.  A bronze statute is planned to honor the gentle spoodle and will be placed at the church so children can continue to have their picture taken with her.  This elegy was commissioned for performance at the annual Blessing service.

Used as Easter prelude and postlude in different years, this composition uses this hymn as the primary hymn to include first line in canon but also intertwines Lo, In the Grave He Lay using some pedal double counterpoint during plus The Strife Is O'er with all three melodies involved during the ending to include simultaneous play of first lines of two hymns..  This 7.00 minute composition is somewhat challenging but not greatly difficult.  A great blend of classical structure while using hymns people know.  Very, very well received after played as prelude.  Tune names:  Neander, Victory, Christ Arose

This organ piece is ideal as liturgical piece for Lent and All Saints' Day/Sunday before Advent commemorating the dead but also for organ concerts on the topic of death and transitoriness. 'Poème funèbre is a very personal piece which, like an epitaph, shall bring to mind the death of a person who died young. I think such a remembrance is important, for it connects people with the dead. The first part is a musical expression of lament and grief: Within its symmetrical structure, the composition rises toward a dramatic climax and, diminishing, returns back to its starting point. This part is followed by a second quiet part in which the Gregorian antiphon 'In paradisum' is paraphrased in soft colours, as an expression of consolation and trusting to the sense of the yet incomprehensible.' During the development the untrained listener is able to keep up with the melodic development.  Pedal line is within reach as composition is moderately paced.  The piece brings classical treatment of a hymn people know and works great with a congregation that likes hearing music on hymns they know.  tune name:  Aurelia.

Used as a place of worship for centuries, first by Christians and then by Muslims (from 1453), the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) still amazes people from all over the world. Since 1934, it is a museum – but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The present music has to be regarded against this background: A reflection, contemplation with music and poetry. The Creation is powerful, but the truth about it is powerful as well. And the realization that the path to truth is reached through wisdom. As a consequence, this piece has to cross the powerful for half its duration, monumental. It is the cupola over all following (observing) verses (sections). From bar 371, the path leads back into the powerful, into the rejoicing (bar 406). It must not be forgotten to mention the suggestion of 'singing in a mosque' (bar 510) which is answered by a simple prayer (bar 511). This is reminiscent of the mosaic above the imperial door of the building portraying Jesus Christ sitting on a jewelled throne. He holds an open book in which one can read 'Peace be with you. I am the light of the world'. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

This Good Friday composition of 2 minutes uses the accompanying figure for the JS Bach composition A Voice Saith 'All Are Mortal' is used with this hymn with melody in pedal.  The concept is by the men doing their job of performing crucifixions seem to have had no idea who was one of the men they were to crucify that day--Jesus was just another victim of their day's work.  The voix celeste is indicated because if this were orchestrated in the baroque period, the accompanying figure would be strings so it is here.  Great for congregations where music is restricted to hymns people know, also good for students learning use of pedalboard because slow meter yet relatively constant movement.  Hymn tune:  Herzliebster Jesu.
