Although not really a season in the traditional sense, Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday of the longest season of the liturgical year, lasting until Advent-nearly half of the calendar year. This is a very gentle and easy-to-prepare setting, in three independent voices, of the hymn tune, SALZBURG (Songs of Thankfulness and Praise; At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing). Quiet and meditative in nature, this piece is approximately two minutes in length and will make a nice, short prelude (or portion of a longer prelude) and will also serve well as an offertory or at the distribution of communion and will also be useful for teaching purposes.

Sister Mary Hueller (1921-2017), DMA from the Eastman School of Music, colleague of Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF, was professor of organ, piano, and liturgical music at Alverno College (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) throughout her professional career. At various times Sister Mary chaired the Fine Arts Division, coordinated the Music Department, and served on many college committees. After Sr. Theophane Hytrek's passing in 1992, Sr. Mary succeeded her as organist at St. Joseph Chapel for several decades.  

“Tribute� was written in response to Sr. Theophane Hytrek’s choral compostion  “Canticle of the Creatures� (SSAA) sung by the School Sisters of St. Francis choirs regularly for community celebrations since it was written in 1949. The choral composition will soon be published in both SSAA and SATB arrangements.

“Tribute� is of intermediate difficulty but has a challenging pedal part. At the time of composition Sr. Mary had learned to use Finale software and engraved the original score herself. This editor enjoyed spending time with Sr. Mary once a week as tutor while she developed this skill. Unfortunately the original computer file is no longer available and extant copies are not of sufficient quality to publish. Dr. Masiakowski produced the following edition based on Sr. Mary’s score. Fingering and pedal suggestions are those of Sr. Mary Hueller.

This prelude is based on the very well-known hymn tune of Hyfrydol, which is known by many different texts.  Some texts are Love divine, all loves excelling, Come, thou long expected Jesus, and Alleluia, sing to Jesus, among many others.  This prelude can work in a variety of fashions, whether at a faster tempo and louder registration, or at a slower pace with softer stops. The recording here has both settings, the first loud, and the scond soft.   Be creative!  It was written and recorded on a two manual instrument.  I hope it can add beauty to your services as a prelude, offertory, or communion music.

Vierne composed two organ masses – Messe basse op. 30 (Summer 1912) and Messe basse pour les défunts op. 62 (Winter 1934/35), both for organ and/or harmonium. These are glorious works filled with melodies, harmony and rhythmic interest historically found in French organ music. The difference between major works and these masses is that each movement within the mass is a few minutes long and serves a purpose during the mass, as certain movements contribute to the drama of the Eucharist.

In this meditation based on the hymn Thomas Tallis' tune I heard the Voice of Jesus Say the melody is played first in the right hand and then in the left hand parts. A simple two measure long refrain connects hymn phrases. This piece will be suitable for any contemplative occasion, such as Communion, Offertory, Vespers, funerals or recital. Dedicated in memory of Bob Anderson.
