Inspired by the opening melody of Olivier Messiaen’s (1908-1992) SERENE ALLELUIAS FROM A SOUL LONGING FOR HEAVEN, from ASCENSION DAY -Four Symphonic Meditations for organ, the piece begins softly with a chant-like melody. As the work progresses, sound volume increases that symbolizes the coming of divine light. The latter half of the piece becomes quieter and ends in a major key; it depicts the assurance of peace and love. Meditation II is suitable for recital use, and may be performed during the Lenten season or Good Friday service. Organ registrations and tempo indications are only suggestions.

Charles Louis Eugène Koechlin (1867-1950) studied with Massenet and Fauré and founded the Société Musicale Indépendante together with Ravel, Schmitt, Caplet and Huré. Poulenc and Sauguet were two of his students. Koechlin's organ composition is published in a two-volume edition for the first time. That this is a very important oeuvre becomes clear from the fact that the premières were performed by important organists: Olivier Messiaen played the Chorale op. 90 and Maurice Duruflé the first Sonatina. Born in Beirut and trained at the Paris Conservatoire, the organist and composer Naji Hakim (*1955) has won numerous prizes both as a creative and as a performing artist. After having worked as an organist in Paris for many years, for example as successor to Olivier Messiaen at La Trinité, he has been composer-in-residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London since 2004. For the 100th anniversary of the Binns organ at the Albert Hall in Nottingham he was commissioned to write 'Fanfare for Nottingham'. The composer designed the work as 'a series of free and energetic variations on the melody of the hymn Nottingham accompanying a merry procession' – it has become a hymnic and effective work, a valuable addition to the organ repertoire.

He studied organ with Jean Langlais at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, was organist at Sacré-Cœur in Paris from 1985-93 and then succeeded Olivier Messiaen as organist at the Église de la Trinité. He gives concerts throughout the world, works as a professor at the Conservatoire de Musique in Boulogne, and holds a visiting professorship at the RoyalAcademy in London.In his organ works, Naji Hakim often draws his thematic material from the Gregorian chant, thesaurus of the Roman Catholic Church, which is regarded as essential part of the liturgy even by Vatican II. This paraphrase of the antiphon to the virgin, 'Salve Regina', is based on the plainsong theme (solemn tone). The Gregorian line is unchanged; it evolves slowly above an expressive harmony. The text of the prayer is underlined by the meditative, soft and peaceful character.
