The piece begins softly, building in volume and intensity to a dramatic ending on full organ. The passacaglia theme is the first seven notes of the hymn tune placed into triple metre. Bars 72-76 introduce two cruciform motifs; 4-note ideas in which lines drawn between the outer two and inner two notes bisect each other to form a cross.
