It is the 10th movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. It was written during Bach's first year in Leipzig, Germany. Bach did not compose the melody. That was written by Johann Schop. Bach only harmonized and orchestrated Schop's melody. A transcription of Jesu was done by English pianist Myra Hess (1890-1965), and was published in 1926 for solo piano.In 1934, Hess' version was adapted for piano duet. British organist Peter Hurford made a transcription of Jesu for organ. Today, Bach's piece is often performed at weddings and funerals. Bach wrote the piece for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings and continuo. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is one of Bach's most enduring pieces of music.The present version is a facilitated reduction of the theme where it is soloed by Organ and chords. The piece can be played on the organ with two manuals and pedals and it has 3 sections. In the first section, choral melody is presented in the right hand part in the key of G minor, in the second section, chorale appears in the left hand part in the key of A minor and in the last section, the key of G minor returns again with the last two phrases of the chorale as the conclusion. Everything is united with the recurring two measure meditative refrain.

In 2006, I was asked to introduce the hymn Blessed Jesus, at Thy Word (Liebster Jesu) at an American Guild of Organists festival of German hymn tunes. I composed this quiet setting of the famous German hymn tune in an homage to Franz Liszt's organ treatment of the Jacob von Arcadelt setting of the Ave Maria (1862, S.659). I hope I have captured the spirit of Liszt's piece and given it new life in this setting. This chorale prelude is appropriate for any worship service and for wedding prelude music as well.

The musical expression of this musical tableau (duration ca. 11 min.) mainly refers to the 3rd verse of the chorale text Trotz dem alten Drachen (I defy the old dragon) illustrating the fight with the dragon in a toccata style in the center of the piece. The opening passages have the chorale melody c. f. in the tenor and slowly build up an agitated mood. In a calm middle section in a Siciliano metre the chorale occurs in the major variant. The corresponding chorale text passage of the 3rd verse is Ich steh hier und singe in gar sichrer Ruh (I stand here and sing in secure peace). After the dramatic climax a calm variation closes the tableau.

In July 2019, Lithuanian organist Paulius Grigonis discovered a previously unpublished composition by Juozas Naujalis, entitled Communio “Jesus, Jesus, Come to Me�, which was preserved at the Lithuanian Theater, Music and Film Museum. The very end of the manuscript bears the inscription of the place and time of its creation: Šven�ionėliai, October 30, 1914. The newly discovered piece was premiered on August 22, 2019, at the Vilnius Cathedral.Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934) – Lithuanian composer and organist. In 1892, he was appointed organist and choir leader at the Kaunas Cathedral, a position he held until his death. Naujalis became actively involved in organizing local musical societies and institutions. As an outcome of his groundbreaking work, a number of important private entities, such as the first boys’ choir in Lithuania based at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas, courses and the school for organists (1911), the first legal Lithuanian bookshop and music publishing house in Kaunas (1905–1912), the first music magazine Vargonininkas (The Organist) and calendars for organists published in Lithuanian (1909–1910), and the music school in Kaunas (1919), have been launched. In 1908, he founded the Children Society and St. Gregory Society for Organists, which was later reorganised into St. Cecilia Society for church musicians (1924). Naujalis was also the first Lithuanian composer to achieve recognition abroad. His church music was published in Regensburg, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Leipzig and Paris. In recognition of his merits in the field of church music he was made Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy in Rome, in 1929. A total of 29 organ pieces by Naujalis were recorded at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas in 2019.
