Quasi-fugal introduction with purposefully excessive notes between entries to convey need for guidance, entry of melody in pedals is held until measure 21.  The eighth notes end at start of line 3 of the hymn with the first three notes of hymn melody used to permeate this half with our search for guidance.  This 2:09 piece was originally used as the prelude, it would do well for the offertory as well.  Instructionally this would be good for helping a student work on pedal having the melody.

The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders. The opening part also contains a melody that paints a darker picture of life, but gradually builds up excitement toward the section where my arrangement of the famous hymn ALL MY HOPE ON GOD IS FOUNDED by Herbert Howells (1891-1982) is stated. After the playing of the hymn, the piece becomes gradually quieter until the end, symbolizing the assurance of peace and love. Organ registrations and tempo indications are only suggestions. The piece is suitable for recital purposes and may be performed in church-related events.

For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today.
