The longing for the Immanuel to come. Then the well know melody of a Dutch Amen (of unknown origin) is heard. Then it builds up towards an exciting rhythm and a slight modification of the melody of Veni Emmanuel in the end that portrays the joy because of the coming of Christ.

It is a service based on stations of the cross from the Anglican tradition, in our case, with a procession to each of nine stations. At each station there is a mini-liturgy which consists of a reading, prayer, interpretive improvisation on the organ, and the singing of a stanza of a hymn. For the improvisation, I weave in images from the reading with the hymn. For example, at the sixth station, the reading includes the phrase “His yoke is easy�, and the hymn is “Go to Dark Gethsemane.� The improvisation alternates between the theme from the chorus “His yoke is easy� from Handel’s Messiah and a very dark and thick chordal setting of the hymn. It later became the anthem of several African countries, and during the presidency of Nelson Mandela, it was folded into the South African national anthem. The song had been banned during the apartheid years because of its association with the ANC. It was the South African counterpart to the role played by We Shall Overcome in the Civil Rights struggle in the U.S. These gentle. reflective variations for organ are appropriate at any time of year, but especially during Black History Month. I wrote this piece to honor the African immigrant families in the church I serve as music director.

In four movements, the score seeks to musically portray thestanzas of the poem in succession.
